Winning the Portugese Championship with the country's wealthiest club and best squad, combined with top, top PowerPoint skills do not prove oneself as a coach/manager capable of achieving the levels of success THFC and its fans crave. Apparently he wants to spend the rest of his career in Brazil. Good luck to him, but I'm chuffed that he's gone.

According to The Metro his quote included the following:

I’m extremely happy with the crowd normally, fans for me represent the essence of football. The away support has been immense,’ he insisted.

Sometimes at home it is difficult and it looks like it drags the ball in to our goal rather than our opponent’s goal.

I don’t intend with this message to send them a warning, neither do I intend to hurt their feelings but this is something that is felt within the group. It is a feeling that invades us in fixtures like this.'

The support at the next game was as loud as it was because it was an 1882 game that had been planned weeks in advance. Pure coincidence, not a crowd responding to what AVB had said. And I don't think the head coach or manager should tell the fans they can do better EVEN IF THEY CAN DO BETTER. And even if he didn't 'intend' to hurt feelings, he certainly created a story, or dare I say it, a narrative.

As a supporter of 40 years I remember how amazing the atmosphere was at The Lane in the late 70's and early 80's, and I still think AVB undermined his position at the club (especially given that the British press are not fans of his) by saying what he said about the crowd.

Well we will have to agree to disagee about that, as for the quotes i got the one i used from the BBC, i suppose it all depends on who you believe ( BBC or the Metro). I was not talking about the next game ( Hull again in the Lge cup) i meant the next Prem game against Saudi Sportswashing Machine and it was better.

And i have been going since the 60's so i also remember better times with the atmosphere.

Spot on.

I'm not saying "we are Tottenham and we have to play Ossie Ardiles-style football", but rather, let's not lull our fans to sleep while playing football. We have a multitude of talented attacking players in our squad, it was at times incredibly frustrating to see how we didn't utilize that strength under AVB. Although, yes, I do agree we did have the odd good attacking game. Away to Cardiff springs to mind, I thought we were excellent that day. Had we only been able to see those kind of performances on a regular basis under AVB, unfortunately we didn't.

i still think we were perhaps two players away from that and 4 from having a real title tilt:
- moutinho and conceicao would have changed our attack
- young keeper and young CB would complete the transformation

Looking at how Sherwood promotes our u21 ahead off the more experienced players, it would not be a surprise that there would be a longstanding mismatch in the strategy of player recruitment and development i.e. AVB vs Sherwood.

If AVB would want immediate success which would be likely with proven experienced players; Sherwood would want us to promote the U21's into our first eleven asap.

I put AVB in the Francis/Gross/Graham/Santini bracket.

He was that bad.

I see no reason to believe that the good things AVB achieved here couldn't have been achieved by any of those bar Santini who couldn't speak a word of English if they'd had the squads AVB had available to them instead of Jason Dozzell, Stuart Nethercott and Andy Sinton.

If we had left him in charge he would have taken us the way Saudi Sportswashing Machine went under Souness, the way Villa went under Houllier. Back to being a mid-table club.

another way of looking at things - without bale and with seven new players - it was a new beginning and a new team to forge.
under the circumstances, AVB should have been given at least ONE season with the new players before judging ?

Why didn't AVB play Bentaleb? At the very least in the EL games? Instead he chose to let players like Paulinho run themselves into the ground...

From where I'm seeing things either he didn't realize how good Bentaleb is or he didn't want to because of backroom arguments. I don't know which one of those is worse...

Or Bentaleb wasn't pushed forward as being ready so that the person who did do that would look slightly competent.

Would that person be Sherwood?

Can't think of a much stronger push towards saying that a player is ready than what Sherwood has done with Bentaleb since taking over as manager. I'm guessing he didn't start rating him in December all of a sudden.

There have been rumours of course of AVB refusing to listen to suggestions about bringing Ade back and using youth players more. Looking at Bentaleb, considering AVB's team selection in EL games in particular it certainly makes those rumours seem at least plausible.

Read in an article recently that Sherwood had been consistently pushing Bentaleb with AVB and was massively frustrated that his voice was not being heard.

No, he wasn't. We played dull, destructive football, but he did get the results those guys didn't get. Based on his points tally only he was doing fine, but clearly something was wrong, which lead to the mutual agreement of ending his contract (tired of people saying it was a sacking).

LOOOOOOOL oh man...the anti Sherwood phalanx are getting desperate it seems.

Is it really that unlikely? It's certainly no less likely than the unsubstantiated rumours that AVB never saw the youth players or that he ignored Timmeh.

Can anyone honestly say they've never worked somewhere where people regularly keep important info to themselves on the basis of "It's my work, why should I let him get the credit?" It happens all the time - what's so special about our club that makes that impossible?

If AVB had taken over at Spurs in 1997 like Gross did and had to get results out of a squad that featured players like Ramon Vega, Clive Wilson, Colin Calderwood and Andy Sinton as first team regulars, I somehow doubt he'd have got to the 70+ point mark. Likewise, if Gross had inherited Bale, Van Der Vaart, Vertonghen, Sandro etc I think he'd have done better than he did. After all, like AVB, Gross won the title in his native country.

Maybe it was a "mutual agreement". But that sounds to me like when someone describes a break-up of their relationship as "mutual". It's never "mutual" is it? Someone always initiates it and given AVB's comments the other day about there being a lack of stability in English football's manager jobs and nobody getting a chance to do a Wenger any more and build a stable team, I get the feeling it wasn't him.

Yeah, and perhaps if Redknapp managed the Cristian Gross side, we'd have gone down; or if Gerry Francis managed our team last year he'd have finished 10th. Or perhaps if Juande Ramos had managed Redknapp's 2011/12 team we'd have won the title...if, if, if...

You can hate AVB all day long, and think he was boring all day long. He even got us our record points haul, plus our most away wins in a season.
But please don't be silly in coming out with these odd extrapolations, especially as THIS current season isn't even over yet

Re: Next Spurs Manager v.2

Not sure what thread this belongs in but what does everybody make of this interview?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...ndre-Villas-Boass-footballing-philosophy.html

He sounds so well rounded and dynamic in this interview...why then did he have us playing the most predictable style of football our club has ever known.

That was what always left me scratching my head, he was supposed to be this GHod of beautiful football yet we really did play some absolute dross, even during last season. I always backed him because he seemed determined to install a winning mentality into the club but his football was something I couldn't defend.
