Greatest debut albums

Yeah I realise that. My point tho is that Nevermind is when rock music was saved according to some people, even tho GnR, Metallica, Pantera and Soundgarden were tearing it up at the time, and Pearl Jam were on the cusp. We still would have had Smashing Pumpkins, REM, Faith No More, etc if Nevermind never came out, but maybe we could have avoided Hole?

I've never liked Nevermind myself. It's a pop record
.

One of the greatest albums ever, deff in my top 10…

Illmatic for sure - hip hop is rammed full of artists who peaked with their debut though tbf

Black on Both Sides by Mos Def, for me

And with regards to game changers then i think Eminems debut (the name escapes me atm) deserves a shout, although not a particular favourite of mine

It Takes a Nation by Public Enemy has got to be up there in those terms also

Rock - de-loused in the comatorium by Mars Volta is one of my favourites as well as QOTSAs self titled debut

Oh yea and Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Fever to Tell also being one of my favourite albums, let alone favourite debuts

A huge favorite of mine but not their debut mate…that was Yo Bum Rush The Show

Nevermind certainly isn't a pop record - well no more in the sense that than any other popular album is.

whats wrong with 'pop' anyway?

as for PE Steff - a bit before my time mate so i'll have to bow to experience on that one :p

Cheeky young whippersnapper ye! :p

But yes…one album before the classic you named…one album we've all forgotten is the Beastie Boys "Licensed To Ill"…???

Ahem.... ;-)

Ah I see what you mean.

Hole weren't actually that bad in my opinion. Certainly not ground breaking, but 'ok'.

Thought of another couple of albums (also after looking through my collection) -

Beastie Boys - Licensed to Ill
Public Enemy - Yo Bum Rush the Show
Led Zep - Led Zep
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?

As far as great debut albums that are also "game changers," I am partial to Ramones - "Ramones"...one of my all-time favorites from top to bottom.

Kate Bush: The kick inside.
The Orb: The Orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld
Amy Winehouse: Frank
Oasis: Definitely maybe

Most of my selections have been covered here, Big Star #1 Record and Stone Roses for me are untouchable.

Pixies - Come On Pilgrim
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys
Interpol - Turn On The Bright Lights
Muse - Showbiz
TOM WAITS - CLOSING TIME (**** ME, AMAZING)

The Smiths, The Smiths
The Strokes, Is this it?
Bat out of hell (embarrassing, but fantastic bearing in mind Mr Loaf was 17 when he wrote it, and hasn't got anywhere near it again)

I think there's only one contender to be honest, Appetite for Destruction. Not just the greatest debut album of all time, but a strong contender for the greatest album of all time

Needs a whole seperate thread

(The greatest albums that is, not Appetite for Destruction)
