Ratings v Scum

The ratings of Dawson are unfair I see he will be this season's spacegoat. Play Chirches have any of you seen him play befoe you make that comment? Playing against and attack like **** is tricky enough but with zero protection from midfield until Sandro came on it's nigh on imposible. Didn't see verts doing any better for the same reason. For most of the game our midfield were in no man's land hence the forwards had no service and defenders no protection. Even Sandro lost Giroud at one point

He was woeful on numerous times, lost his man, gave the ball away, stupid long balls

I really have no idea what we were trying to do, other than pack the midfield with beasts who turned out to be wallflowers. Pretty depressing.

This x a million. Those 3 really let everybody down today. Capoue was like a rabbit in the head-lights, especially 1st half. The other two put in completely half-ar*ed performances.

My ratings:

Lloris - 8

midfield trio - 5

dawson - 4

everyone else - 6.

Not all doom and gloom though. Put Eriksen and Lamela in there and we'll find a better balance between creativity and solidarity. And Sandro will be the no.1 defensive midfielder for us, no danger of that!

Chiriches or Kaboul in for Dawson next game please. Dawson for the Europa etc.

Disappointed to lose obviously, but tbh didnt expect us to win, just hoped we might.

More worried about our apparant lack of creating decent chances. Yes that mdfield may well be beasts at getting the ball but they dont provide.
AVB's first mistake of the season, the Defoe sub, made no sense should have been Holtby or Sigurdsson at that point. Despite me not thinking we would win, that match was there for the taking in the end, such a shame.

Hopefully we will get back on track with a good performance v Norwich and the new boys will start to integrate

Defoe - 4 - Real strange sub this one, I remember going 4-4-2 when 2-0 down here and winning 3-2 when bringing Defoe on, but it was strange and never worked today, wasn't going to.

Lamela - 6 - Some good touches, particularly one on his chest, can't wait to see more of him in a Spurs shirt.

I don't get these ratings

He could not have gotten things much more wrong for their goal. First he played Walcott offside by not following the line set by Vertonghen. Then, having dropped deeper than the rest to follow Giroud he loses him and allows him to get to the cross. Not alone to be blamed, I thought Capoue and Rose got the pressing completely wrong, but still Dawson was obviously the main man at fault for that. When that happens and we lose by one goal do you not expect him to get the main portion of the blame?

In addition to that he lost the ball in a very dangerous position and got more or less dominated by Giroud throughout - despite those physical duels being one of Dawson's strongest points normally.

Not a good game from the big man...

Everyone bar Lloris were woeful. The number of times our midfield lost the ball inc Sandro when he came on. At least Dawson made some intervention and blocks.

Lloris - 8 - Quick off his line, some very good saves, kept the scoreline respectable

Walker - 6 - Defensively sound, but his delivery is really poor

Dawson - 4 - Lost Giroud for the goal, lots of careless mistakes. Dawson hasn't been at his best for a while now and once Kaboul is fit again and Chiriches is settled then he shouldn't be starting anymore.

Vertonghen - 6 - Ok I suppose

Rose - 4 - Lost Walcott for the goal. I want him to succeed here but he looks painfully out of his depth

Capoue - 5 - Some good tackles, but gave the ball away far too many times

Dembele - 3 - A hugely disappointing game from someone who has bossed big games for us in the past. Offered absolutely nothing going forward

Paulinho - 6 - Tried hard but he's not creative enough to play the role that AVB wanted him to play here

Townsend - 7 - Looked our most likely player to make anything happen for us when he was on the pitch. He reminds me a lot of Robben, not only for his pace, dribbling ability and the eagerness to cut inside and shoot powerfully with his left foot, but also his poor decision making and hogging of the ball.

Soldado - 4 - Not a great deal of service, but generally poor in the build up

Chadli - 5 - Sorry, I'm not convinced. Got into some good positions in the first half but didn't show any real ability in terms of being able to beat a man or deliver a good ball. And wingers who can't do either of those...well I'm not really sure what they're for.

Subs:

Defoe - 6 - Dropped deep, worked hard to make something happen but it didn't really come off for him today

Sandro - 7 - Got stuck in, thought we were the better side after he came on

Lamela - 6 - A few nice touches, but no major impact

AVB - 4 - The wrong starting line-up today I'm afraid. Last year at the Emirates, he took the very brave decision to play with two strikers and take the game to them, and it paid off. We forced them back into their own half, completely dominated the first 20 minutes, took a deserved lead and it's quite likely we'd have won the game if Adebayor hadn't got himself sent off. Arsenal have the same team as last year so why not try it again? We looked better once we had two strikers on the pitch anyway. If he did want to stick with the 4-3-3 we'd been playing for the first few games, then fine, but you can't play that formation with direct wingers and no creative players in the middle. We were pressing high up the pitch and forcing Arsenal back into their own half, but all of our attacking play came from the wings and it was very predictable and easy to defend against. If we are to play this kind of formation, we need to have at least one of Eriksen, Sigudsson, Holtby or Carroll on the pitch AT ALL TIMES. If Capoue hadn't got injured I think AVB may have brought on Sigurdsson for Chadli, but why did Gylfi not start? I know he played in mid-week, but we lacked someone who could play the killer ball, the kind that Gylfi played to Bale to score our first in the last NLD, and Chadli's pace would have been useful from the bench against tired legs.

Yeah yeah, time to gel and all that, but there are serious limitations to our play when using these kinds of players in this combo, and I hope AVB doesn't make this kind of mistake again.

Spurs do not have someone in the midfield technically gifted, all players base themselves on power, speed, where's the passing wizz? Not to mention Dawson's performance tonight...

He played **** today, he'll get bad ratings for it. Was at fault for the goal and made errors that could easily have lead to more.

Usually plays far better, I don't think he's a lost cause, he'll just have to improve or his position will be under threat from Kaboul.

Agree should have done better with the goal but Giroud was hard to handle for several players and Verts was miles away from Daws.

Isn't going 4-4-2 what AVB used to do when behind at Porto, and it tended to work a lot of the time?

I think it's good in that, if we have territorial control of the game and Arsenal are going to find it tough to break out of that, we don't really need the extra midfield man. But we do need the extra striker there finishing it off.

Didn't work today, but let's see after the international break how our team looks playing together.

I think if you switch it round there are a lot of positives. We controlled the third game on the trot but again created very few chances. But we have seen that problem and signed Erikson and Lamela to sort that out. It was no surprise that we created our best chances in the last fifteen minutes when Lamela came on. But I do think we made a mistake but having three midfielders that are about the same it does leave us isolated at times.

Also with our high line we will always be prone to getting caught out from counter attacks but that is why we have Lloris in goal for us instead of just a shot stopper. He like every other player has been handpicked to suit the formation.

To be fair I watched the game and was not too despondent we controlled a game against Arsenal at their place we will improve when our new players bed in. Apart from the midfield three I thought everyone had quite a decent game. It was the type of game if the score had been reversed (but the game the same) people would be saying how we are a tight ship at the back and we closed them out.

We will be fine this season look on the positive note we are 4 points better off than last season!!!!

In a nutshell, Arsenal won because they
  • had belief
  • played as a team
  • wanted it that much more, especially first half
  • were faster and more direct in attack
  • got everyone behind the ball when defending
  • produced that critical bit of magic in front of goal

Conversely Tottenham lost because they

  • made too many individual errors
  • lacked the extra class in front of goal (too many wayward shots)
  • lacked team cohesion (it'll come)
  • lacked creativity going forward
  • failed to defend in sufficient numbers
  • failed to attack in sufficient numbers

Lloris 8 - no chance with their goal but superb stops and swift sweeping kept us in it. Spurs' MotM
Walker 6 - put himself about but doesn't have the class to match the number of shots he gets
Dawson 6 - not to blame for their goal, threw himself into challenges as always and produced some great diagonal passes that found their man, but marked down for ghastly possession foux-pas second half
Vertonghen 6 - looked a bit shaky at times, lost his man for their goal, not at his classiest
Rose 6 - all at sea for their goal, quite impressive otherwise but needs to improve his crossing
Paulinho 6 - worked hard without pulling up any trees. Not too sure about his shooting ability
Capoue 5 - too many misplaced passes and too easily caught in possession
Dembele 4 - for once very poor in possession; offered nothing going forward; deservedly subbed
Chadli 5 - stood off at times, also offered too little going forward
Townsend 7 - easily our greatest threat cutting in from the flank, two decent shots on target and some deft crossing into danger areas; disappointed he was subbed rather than Chadli
Soldado 5 - no service, but maybe could have done more to find it

Subs

Sandro 5 - looked off the pace
Defoe 6 - fought for possession and used it well
Lamela n/a - looks skilful

Are you judging him on reputation? Did you not notice that at least four out of five were brilliant?

What are you trying to tell us here? That dawson is good enough?

His passes are uncontrolable and end up with the opposition.

I have been saying for nearly ten years now that we need to upgrade or we'll carry on losing against the gooners like this. Today is no different.

Did you see when he dribbled to the halfway line and couldn't find the ball? That was hilariously bad.

Re: Dawson; he certainly is not AVBs preferred type of CB, so I fully expect him to be dropped as soon as Vlad and/or Kaboul are ready. Unless he picks up his game, of course. AVB on Vlad:

Of Chiriches, Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas said: “He has tremendous qualities coming out with the ball. Great build-up play – something we insist on with our central defenders"
