Gareth Bale joining Real Madrid 'can boost Wales', says Hughes
Gareth Bale can give himself and his national team a platform to shine if he decides to join Real Madrid, according to former Wales manager Mark Hughes.
Speculation is growing that Wales star Bale, 24, will join the Spanish giants, possibly for a world record fee.
Hughes, now manager of Stoke City, says leaving Tottenham is a big decision for Bale but also a huge opportunity.
"It's a huge stage and to have a Welshman playing on that stage will help the national team," Hughes said.
"As long as he feels comfortable that he can deal with the pressures that will be thrown at him I wish him well, if that's the decision he makes.
"You've got to be sure in your own mind that it's the right decision for you your family and your football career first and foremost."
Hughes, talking to BBC Wales Sport after his Premier League side edged Conference Premier opponents Wrexham 1-0 in a friendly on Sunday, speaks from experience after his own big-money move to Spain during his playing career.
In 1986 Hughes was sold by Manchester United to Barcelona for a then British record £2.3m but struggled to adapt to the playing style at the Nou Camp. He was loaned to Bayern Munich the following season and proved a success in the German Bundesliga.
"When I moved there was significant difference in terms of what you could do going abroad. Now with the Premier League there isn't a great deal of difference to be perfectly honest," Hughes added.
"You can be an exceptionally rich young man if you stay in the Premier League, so really it would be a decision in terms of the football and culture he [Bale] wants to experience.
"It's a huge opportunity, you have to be strong enough mentally in being able to deal with everything that a move abroad entails.
"I was probably a little bit too young. I was 23 but in terms of my life experience and my football experience I was even younger than that.
"That's one of the reasons that I struggled out there... it was a big step and at the time there was a lot of speculation about my future.
"At times I probably felt I was railroaded into it somewhat and I ended up there, but it wasn't a bad place to end up."

Right, I don't like Hughes (or Rod Hull or Camilla Parker-Bowles or Ailsa out of Home and Away because they all look like him). But before we start with another "shut up you twunt another anti Spurs conspiracist yadda yadda" maybe it's worth considering..... Perhaps a move to Madrid is too good an opportunity for Bale to pass up, and in his interests to go?
Not saying I want him gone, but I do recognise I look at the world through Tottenham tinted specs and only ever want the best for Spurs. Plus we're pretty good at putting up a Liverpool-esque siege mentality at times!

Being fair though, this is the biggest story in EUROPE...no the WORLD this summer.
It is potentially the biggest football transfer EVER.
People are going to talk about it until the cows come home and I bet a part of Lewis and Levy are loving this. Spurs have never had so much global exposure. All the footballing world's eyes are on us. Are we flinching? Where will Bale end up? What is going to be the fee? Is it going to be paid upfront by telegraphic transfer or is Levy going to accept installments but make Fiorentino Perez personally wheel barrow them to Joe Lewis' yaught? Everyone wants to know. They want to know more than Sky Sports wants to understand!

AS splash with the news that Tottenham owner Joe Lewis met with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez yesterday in the US to discuss the transfer of Gareth Bale.
Initial discussions have taken place between the two clubs last week, as proven by public statements from both Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti and Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Perez is hoping to pay a similar sum than which Real Madrid paid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo (96 million euros) and include either Fabio Coentrao or Angel Di Maria (both valued at 30 million euros) in the deal.

450 mill turnover, wages to turnover ratio of less than 50%, they make 120 mill pounds from tv rights alone, 25 mill a year from the new Fly Emirates shirt sponsorship, the club is rolling in cash and all this "we want to pay for Bale over 5 years " is just their tactic to keep the overall price down.
They have the money, they will pay a world record sum, we will be fine
