Now that Villa has gone Atletico then I have plumped for Soldado. Benteke would be a good buy at the right price for us but I just have a feeling that Soldado would be more interchangeable and mobile which would suit the front of the team more.
If we could sign Soldado plus someone to play a wide forward role like Nani, Salah, Bernard etc which again depends on what we have to spend, what we can raise and what we have spent already then I think we would have had a very good window. Personally, I think that Nani would be an amazing signing for us and with him playing all the time here by comparison to Man Utd, it would see us get the best out of him. If after signing a forward we can't stretch to signing someone of that value then Salah represents the cheaper option. More of a gamble but with just as big rewards if it works out and less damage if it doesn't.

Carlos Vela would be a decent signing. Was impressed with him whilst at Arsenal, showed patches of genius but never fully progressed there, most likely due to a lack of consistent first team appearances, but at Sociedad he has very much turned potential into production. Technically great, comfortable in possession and can finish with variety.
That said, Sociedad being in the Champs League could be an issue in any attempt to prize him away.

Sounds about right to me. If AVB persisted with a misfiring Torres at Chelsea, whilst isolating Drogba and Lukaku, there's no way Benteke is his kind of forward.
Benteke really is another Defoe/Bent/Crouch/Ade 'safe but limited' signing. Blimey, Baldini discovered Higuain and Cassano and signed Batistuta. Back him to find our man.

He didn't discover Higuain at all. He was very well known, he just brought him to Madrid. That'd be like saying the guy who bought Falcao to Porto discovered him, not true.
Cassano, I'll give you that. But he was what? 15 when he played for Lecce, so he was probably well known round Italy. He signed an old Batistuta off the back of great seasons in the Italian League.

Discovered gets used for stuff like that quite regularly, if a word is used to describe a situation frequently in everyday colloquial use then that becomes the meaning of the word.
In the strict sense of the word very few people in roles like Baldini's ever discover a player.
GB: Don't you think if we blow a large chunk of our transfer budget on Benteke that Baldini is in agreement that he's (one of) the best possible options we can go for?

Higuain was only 18 though, hardly proven quality. I only mentioned Batistuta to make the point that he should know what a world class CF looks like.
Tbh I still don't trust the influence of Sherwood and his transfer committee mates. Benteke just looks like the type of signing we'd've made at any point during the Redknapp years. I just expected Baldini and AVB to come up with something smarter.

Regarding Batistuta, I imagine Villa could/would have been ours.

Yeah. Baldini's signing record is a combination of teenagers who went on to become world class (De Rossi, Cassano, Samuel, Higuain, Lamela) and just past their best worldies (Batistuta, Guardiola, Cannavaro, van Nistelrooy). Villa definitely fits the latter group.

We missed out on one that I'd have liked - Facundo Ferreyra. I think he has great potential and only cost Shakhtar $9m, so relatively cheap.

I don't know how prolific our striker has to be with Bale, Paulinho and one of Sig or Dempsey on the left (at worst) around him. Those players can all score goals. We need someone strong and good with his back to goal who can play a bit. I want Benteke or Michu.
