Not in my opinion. VDV roamed, but when we didn't have the ball (which is the only way to judge a formation) VDV would stay in the third phase line, behind the forward but in front of the second phase line. So in my opinion he played the same role that Sheringham used to play for us.

I don't rate Caulker and never have done, he's a disaster waiting to happen. People are finally realising that he's simply not good enough for a top four team.
 
Friedel 7 -couldnt do anything about the goals and made a couple of good saves to keep us in it
Naughton 5 - at fault for first goal and although played a couple of nice balls, was poor defensively
Caulker 4 - worst game in a Spurs shirt. No understanding with Verts
Verts 4 - poor and lazy too
BAE 5 - not great but better than Caulker and Verts
Hudd 4 - looked slow, cumbersome and stayed too deep
Parker 5 - tried but really poor - offered no cover for the defence and nothing going forward
Lennon 5 - well off the pace. Played on the wrong side in the first half and looked hopeless. Marginally better in second half but not enough running off the ball
Sigg 4 - completely anonymous
Bale 6 - our best player but still well below his normal performance. Some world class touches and a great cross for the goal
Dempsey 6 - tried hard and took his goal well but CF definitely not his best position

Dembele -4 well off the pace and nearly gifted them another goal
Obika - 4 doenst look like the answer. Made a great run to get in behind their defence but I think a top striker would have finished it.
Walker 4 didnt understand the Naughton for Walker sub. Didnt add anything at all

AVB 4. Wrong team, wrong tactics and poor subs. Got it all wrong today and didnt get the team "up for the game". When will he learn that two DMs against poor sides and a slow start doesnt work. i thought our early home performances this season were a thing of the past. Clearly not.

I wouldn't write him completely off just yet, but I have to admit I didn't get the fuss about him earlier this season and was surprised that AVB rated him above Dawson. What concerns me with Caulker is that I still can't work out what type of centre half he is. He isn't fast and doesn't sweep up behind his partner, he isn't a great ball playing defender and nor is he the old fashioned brave ball attacking centre half. And because I can't see what type of defender he is, I can't work out the best style of centre half partner for him.

Only just turned 21 - a baby in terms of central defenders. He's way ahead of most others his age. Plenty of time to mature, to iron out the mistakes and to develop a keener appreciation of the game as a whole and, more specifically, where the greatest threat lies.

Whether he makes that progress is another matter.

He is a deep lying player though. When he was last a regular for us he sat deep and Palacios ran around the pitch like a headless chicken closing people down. I don't think you can play Huddlestone alongside an anchor man in a four man midfield.

Agreed that he doesn't bomb forward.

But playing a deeper role doesn't equate to being a defensive midfielder, IMO.

I've never rated him tbh. I'd say subtle things here and there but he had too many fans for me to say he's not very good without looking like I'm just saying that to go against the grain.

I think his performances have deteriorated as the season goes on, TBH. He looked pretty good when he played earlier, but admittedly doesn't look anywhere near now.

Still think there's hope. Is LK coaching him? He should be.
