What Do You Expect From This Season?

I agree with you but we spent 60m pounds thats SIXTY million quid - so why do we keep using this as an excuse?

I am sure you will agree 60m is a brickload of cash

£15m player to replace a £30m outgoing player
£6m player to replace a £15m outgoing player
£8m player to replace a player that came through our youth ranks, but probably was the finest defender i've seen in a Spurs shirt in my time of watching
£13m player to future proof our goalkeeping position - ok we might be in a slightly better position with that one, but not much as Freidel's main fault was he was old and had to be replaced soon.
£8m young attacking midfield player - punt worth taking but someone who won't and wasn't expected to contribute to the first team straight away. Probably paid over the odds to beat off interest from others.

So you know... we DID spend quite a bit, but not anywhere near what we brought in in sales and as you can see, actually we haven't really upgraded in any area other than keeper and a lot of the spending was an attempt to just keep our head above water.

If we'd have pulled Moutinho across the line there'd be less excuses as Dembele could have been seen as VDV's replacement and not Modric's but as it is I think we're well short of where we were without even making major mistakes in the transfer market.

And this is the bit that im getting at with the whole 60m quid. My viewpoint is there was no excuse not to have strengthened properly with around 60-80m quid.

By the way im staggered that you think Sig was someone who wasnt expected to contribute straight away. I think he was expected to show his supposed quality instantly. He had played in premier league etc.

And thinking about it - I would say whilst Vert did come in to replace King, Caulker has also been brought in - someone we didnt have last season.

Chelsea have added real quality in Oscar and Hazard though. Admittedly they do look pretty powderpuff upfront without Drogba there.

I agree that Oscar and Hazard are quality but they have only strengthened in one part of the team and their current manager cannot fit all of those players into his first choice 11. Drogba won them two cups single-handedly last season, without him they are no where near the same threat.

That's ok if the outgoings were far less - which wasn't the case.

But the quality of the squad took a backward step so I don't see how you can use last season as a yardstick.

It can if you're either unhappy about Redknapp getting fired or AVB replacing him or just looking wind up others.

I think that is a little unfair, the two Manchester clubs look like they are about to break away and positions from 3 to 6 are wide open. We nearly all agree that we are going to claim one of them and I do not think that it is unfair to think we are capable of taking one of the top two rather than bottom two.

Come off it man. As Milo said, Arsenal have took a backwards step and Saudi Sportswashing Machine have remained static at best.

You can't say finishing 5th would be a massive fail. City and United are beyond our reach, but right now you can't really separate Everton, Arsenal, us and even Chelsea. Chelsea have a better squad, Arsenal have consistently finished in the top 4 for years and Everton have avoided their usual start of season slump. I'd say anywhere from 3rd to 6th is realistic and the difference could be only a few points.

7th or lower would be poor, but I wouldn't consider anything a failure if we continue picking up points at our current rate. We can't control what other teams do, just try to do our best and that's why I prefer looking at the number of points we get instead of just league position. My target would be 70 points, but anything above 60 would be acceptable.

We should be in the fight for 4th (even 3rd) till the end and it should be a target, but we shouldn't be expecting to finish there. Miss out by a point and it's a massive failure?

We made money though.

So we sold more than we got in. Which insinuates the squad quality went down (roughly).

Top 4. If we don't get that then a) what was the reason for getting a new manager? And b) why did we fail so miserably to replace Modric? not like his departure was a shock.

Because the board weren't happy with the previous one, for various reasons.

A) because the old manager took his eye off the ball and failed at the latter end of two seasons, refused to sign a new contract when asked and then attempted to demand more money on his own terms.

B) because players like Modric are world class and it's not just a matter of thinking 'oh i need to replace him', they don't grow on trees and unless you are unearthing a gem, which has inherent risks, they will demand rather high wages and transfer fees.

Also B) it's always possible that it was thought strengthening the whole first eleven was a better move then buying one good player.

No I agree, I'd be unhappy with sixth or lower

As long as we're in there till the end it's okay with me. If two or three out of Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea run away from us, leaving us with nothing to play for the last few weeks, I'd be unhappy.

I'll be unhappy for sure, but ultimately losing King, Modric, Van der Vaart, (and so far pretty much Kaboul, Ekotto, Parker and Adebayor) are a massive massive miss for any team to deal with. Nobody deals with that easily.
