Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Re: Huddlestone

I don't think that washes, you were saying that you expect us to win those games but the results were not that different from the corresponding fixtures last season (1 point difference I think). And I think that any difference in results or performance can easily be explained by having an unbalanced side and the team getting used to a new manager. I think that we cannot really draw too many conclusions about how the team are playing or getting used to changes that AVB has made until November.

There was only a 1pt difference, but that was because we royally fudged up against Norwich last season. Just like we fudged up against them this season, but at least picked up a point (although I do not believe there is much difference between either performance).

A top six team should be looking to win ALL their home games. It is fair to say that a point at home against top four teams isn't a bad result but certainly we should be favourites to beat 7th and below at home. We won't (of course, that's why we aren't title challengers plus football doesn't work that way) but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be disappointed not to.

What makes it worse for me is that the performances against WBA and Norwich were appalling. They were appalling at the ground and were just as bad when I stupidly watched them on TV later that evening.

And the new manager thing doesn't wash for me. Last season people were talking about sacking Redknapp in March and bringing AVB in to give us that new manager bounce. I have voiced concerns before that I believe AVB has changed things too much, too fast and that had the change been more gradual I think we'd be better off. Hopefully it will even out over the season and his radical changes will pay dividends then. If we beat Norwich and WBA away from home then we get the 4pts in a season we should be taking against clubs like that.

The new manager bounce normally happens when a failing manager is replaced mid-season, that is not what has happened here. I think anyone expecting an immediate bounce was a little silly but I do not remember many people on here saying that would happen.

I also had doubts about AVB and was concerned that he would change too much too quickly, not to mention the dubious man management skills that he displayed at Chelsea. So far I am reserving judgement, I wasn't enamoured with the way that he handled the potential sales/loans of Dawson and Hudd and was sad to see VdV go (even if I could see that it was good business) but we are still in the stage where I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

The performance against West Brom was not appalling. The Norwich game was poor.....

I was there. I thought it was pretty appalling. I also sat through the Hoddle years, as did many here, and whilst not as appalling as some of those performances, appalling it still was.

The hoddle years? Some of the best football I've ever seen at the lane you mean? The last year was poor, but pretty obvious why that was with the ancient squad he had. That was built for a quick league cup win and uefa entry, then he'd get the war chest he was promised to re build properly, unfortunately Ferdinand had other ideas in the cup final!

Shocked hoddle's team was brought up when you could have said, shreeves, gross and especially graham!

Some of the worst performances of all were under Venables, post Gazza

Whether we played some good football or not home defeats to city, Fulham, saints and the final day disaster to Blackburn were appalling. Didn't see the Shreeves years although gross was pretty gross too!! Graham was anti football but results weren't that bad.

Anyway, the WBA match was, let's just say, well below par.

You sure about that? We had some appalling results under Graham too, and our form was generally superior under Hoddle than Graham. That said I thought 01/02 was some of the best football I've seen at the Lane (possibly even THE best, including last year and the 80's) but from 02/03 it did all go wrong.

Re: Huddlestone

And let us not forget it was AVB who was happy to let VDV go. Modric there is nothing he could do. But Parker (who I don't believe AVB will play that much anyway, it at all) and VDV were very much our players for this year if AVB wanted them.

I back AVB. I didn't want VDV to go but I also appreciate that in the Premiership VDV cannot function in a 4-5-1 midfield variation. He is not a central midfielder making runs from deep or a wide man. He is a deep lying forward and has to play alongside another forward. But I am not going to be making excuses for AVB either as he still has a very strong squad and first team. I don't think the first team is as good as last season, and therefore my expectations are that we won't finish top four, but I do believe it's a good enough team to be challenging for 4th and finish inside the top six.

I have to say MLK I think this is on the money and don't see much to disagree with at all. The only excuse I could offer AVB is that he did not get his primary choice of player in Moutinho thanks to Levy out-Levying himself, but I agree, the squad is very good and he should be able to deliver some results.

Re: Huddlestone

Maybe it's because I've been spoilt the last three seasons but I expect us to do well against WBA and Norwich at home. If those two performances had been away from home, they would have been acceptable IMO. But at WHL they weren't. WBA is only the second time in my memory where I have actually been bored watching a game of football at WHL. And that was after 20 mins! The other time was in the 90's against Southampton at home in what was truly an awful match......

I remember a home game against Everton in 95 that was absolutely awful...

Hoddle didn't have much luck at all...whether it was injuries to Ziege and Korsten, or Ferdinand having a mare in the final and us being denied clear pens, he just didn't get the luck...his failure as our manager remains my single saddest Spurs thing...I wanted him to be The Man so much...I will never forget leaving brickford bridge after losing 4-2 and realizing the time had come...so sad...

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas says he has not been feeling under pressure

By Simone Bargellini. Last Updated: September 19, 2012 11:29am

Villas-Boas got off to a less than stellar start at Spurs as the club began their Premier League campaign without a win in three games.

That run prompted questions over how long the Portuguese boss would last at White Hart Lane after he was sacked by Chelsea last season following just eight months in charge.

However, Spurs' 3-1 victory at top-flight newcomers Reading at the weekend eased the heat on Villas-Boas ahead of their UEFA Europa League opener against Lazio on Thursday.

The 34-year-old is adamant he does not feel under pressure and says he speaks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy daily over the club's progress.

"It is not true that in recent weeks I have felt the pressure of the club," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"On the contrary: I have a daily relationship with chairman Levy.

"We survey the development of our programmes in perfect harmony."

Asked by the Italian media ahead of Thursday's clash whether he would consider a career in Serie A, he added: "Now I feel great at Tottenham where I can work on a new project."

First big test as Spurs boss for AVB tonight, first game against a great side. I suspect the pressure might be a little more intense tomorrow!

That would be very silly regardless of the result tonight. Our only aim at this stage should be getting out of the group. A loss against QPR on Sunday would be a different matter.
