Mathys Tel

Confession, I really doubted him, thought he just wasn't up to PL standard ---but boy, what a goal! Really fabulous. I hope he proves me wrong time and time and time again. The goals we remember best are the stunners. The Ziege free kick. Danny Rose. Kane defying the angles from way over on the left before ripping off his mask in celebration. The outrageous ones are what we love, they feed your heart and soul like nothing else.

His ceiling is amongst the highest in Europe. If we fail to get the best out of him he will.move back to the continent and become a worldie for the next five to seven years.

There were tons of people on here in the era when one G.Bale first started playing for us who said he was dross. Tel is another like that. Sadly the sky news daily star collective have created a world of definitives - a player is either amazing or toss - nothing in between.

In Gray, Tel and Fernandez we have three of the top youngsters in Europe - we had four but sold one to Brighton.

At the same age as Tel is now.

van Hecke was on Loan at Heerenveen from Brighton. van de Ven has just begun to start at Wolfsburg. Tosin was on loan at West Brom in the Championship. Senesi has just become a starting player in the Argentinian top division for San Lorenzo. Robertson was playing for Hull in the Championship. Maddison was playing for Norwich in the Championship. Kudus was a squad player at Ajax. Marmoush was on loan at St Pauli in Bundesliga 2. Solanke was a mostly unused sub at Liverpool.

I guess all we can do is trust Roberto with this young guy. Mathys has now reminded us of what we lost when Sonny got to his senior years and needed to eventually leave. That goal was Sonnyesque to be fair. There's also been a lot of fans suggesting Richi should have been ahead of Mathys. If he keeps performing like that and having end product, our Brazilian striker will soon be forgotten. It's perhaps a reminder that guys like Mathys get less opportunities all the time we hold onto the senior players. We always need to create space for them to be nurtured which is what is happening now with Tel.

Tel's flaws are decision making ones, either hesitation in making the first move or just wrong choice. That can be coached.

I've also said, for now, he can't be the main man, he needs Maddison, Fernandes, Tonali, Kudus, Savio, etc to be pulling defenders away, making space for him to isolate against his FB, the Chelsea game highlights what he can do if he's given the 1:1 opportunities consistently

There have been significant improvements in them this season under RDZ.
Against Chelsea he was often doubled-up on.
The players you've called on there are all needed to do their jobs for the team.
I actually think Tel plays with great personality, desire, and courage when the belief and trust is placed in him. I see that emerging quite rapidly among his teammates.
I thought his decision making on Saturday was largely excellent; when he did choose not to take his man on, it was due to something systemic not being quite right around him. And instead of trying to do it all himself and potentially either wasting the ball or losing it in a key area, he played for the team. Finally, he has vastly improved his defensive work, albeit it is still an area he will really need to maintain focus on.

What we saw Saturday was perhaps the first time an opposition has had to worry about us from the left, from the right and through the middle. What we've seen in the past a lot of scenarios where the opposition can ring-fence a single player like Kudos or Tel and negate them. Then we end up scracting our heads as to why they're not performing when they get doubled up or isolated. We've had periods of the last 2 years where guys like Gallagher, Bergval, Simons etc have been the other wide player. It makes it incredibly hard for the dribbler to be effective.

One week ago I was talking about Spurs playing Coventry and Madds having 55-60 touches of the ball in a single half. All of our players just took that option and in some ways overplayed through Madds who was excellent. I said at the time that when we get our number 10 working as well as the wide areas then we will be a different proposition. Fair play to Roberto. He made those tweaks and found a new gear. It would have been easy for him just to assume as we were away at Chelsea to keep things narrow. It was stretching them wide that allowed us to pick them off through the middle.

I'm a Tel fan. I'm not sure he got every decision right but that's fair at his age. I actually predict that he will win us loads of penalties if he keeps driving into the side of the 18 yard box and using that footwork.

Its amazing how 1 goal can change someone’s opinion on a footballer. This young lad was getting pelters for months and people even groaned at him starting the Chelsea game.

It won’t be long before the Chelsea goal is forgotten and people start moaning about him again after a poor performance.
