Not trying to redirect but VDV has never partnered well. Oh actually maybe with Danso but that probably because Danso is a no frills solid defender. Over the long term I think the level that VDV is held to be is going to have to be re-evaluated.

I think if either is going to be a mainstay the partner needs to be someone whose defensive qualities are absolutely top notch to cover for either's weaknesses. I don't know if we have that player in the squad currently.

Makes the captaincy and payrise and getting someoen who really doesn't match even worse

I can't dance there at all. I do wonder if RDZ assumed we'd control the game to the extent that the attacks wouldn't matter and in some regard he's been correct we do control a decent amount of possession but teams will always have their time and neither CB seems suited to playing 1vs1 against a tricky attacker.

Centre back more than any position is about the partnership, pairing VDV with someone with the same amount of love for a battle as him is as close to sabotage as you can get.

This era of manager that refuses to acknowledge that football is a game that involves other teams trying to exploit your weaknesses does my head in.

Posters were saying that van Hecke is great on the ball, we need him to progress it up the pitch, but what about his day job. We've gone from one centre back who's brick in the air to having two of them.

I think his reputation as a great defender is almost entirely built on the days under Ange when he was using his pace to catch and tackle a forward that was otherwise clear through.
 
Still think I'd prefer to have VDV at LB for his attributes, plus I just don't trust Udogie and just don't think much of Robertson. Van Hecke I don't think is as bad as being made out defensively but regardless I like his on the ball play and would pair him with Tosin which would be a better balanced partnership IMO.

I never thought it before but I am coming round to him as a LB because he is a useless CB currently

We swapped the next Vidic for the wrong Ferdinand brother!!

Having 2 CBs who (despite their height) are both weak at defensive headers plus little old Robertson at LB (instead of strapping Spence) is going to probably result in a lot of teams targeting us with aerial bombardments this season now that they’ve seen how much joy Villa got from that tactic.
