Climate Change

Going vegan helps but you don't have to go that far if you don't want. Just stopping or vastly reducing the amount of beef we eat would have a significant impact.

The EU does have lots of preferencetial deals with developing nations already for certain products as far as I know.

Also, everyone should learn to swim if you can't already. Especially if you live near the coast.

What happens to all the cows we don't eat?

I’m looking at reducing food miles and would be interested in some tips from those who have been down that (local) road already.

I was surprised how much of our carbon footprint can be attributed to our food after doing the basic climate hero audit.

No, they are destroyed at birth. They aren't economically worth feeding to a maturity where they have enough meat on to eat. Hence why you never see male juveniles in fields - just the 1/1000 kept for stud
I don't think that is right. Most of the high-end beef is from bullocks (steers). Bulls are rare, to be sure, and are mostly kept as sperm banks.

My uncle is livestock farmer - I'll whatsapp him.

Haha....I'll paste in his answer unaltered..... I was expecting something more succinct.

Good question. There are four types of beef.
1. Cows (beef or dairy types) who come to the end of purpose e.g producing milk or calves.
2. Males are either castrated or left as bulls. Most are castrated cos they are easier to manage for obvious reasons. Most bullocks are slaughtered by the time they are about 30 months old. Young bulls are slaughtered by about 22 months.
3. heifers can be beef breeds or dairy. Beef heifers are normally slaughtered between 20 and 30 months of age. Dairy heifers who don’t go on to have calves are slaughtered around the same age.
4. stock bulls (the daddy) are slaughtered when they are no longer active or get injured in the process of mating. Riding.
Like with humans females are slightly in the majority. So most beef comes from females in Ireland because they are predominantly dairy breeds as well.
All your Mc burger beef probably comes from cows.
If you go to good butcher he will only be selling heifer beef.
Riding.....lol
