***Tottenham v Brentford OMT***

The Mike Tyson quote about punches to the face and plans always comes to mind. Brentford brought aggression and that was the end of us. Bergvall trying little tricks in our defensive third that would have come off in preseason. I don't really blame him as how else will we break the press in the way the manager wants.
 
It’s one game. One. Let’s at least wait until it’s 10 before the meltdowns. I genuinely can’t think of another time on this board where the reaction to a loss has been so vociferous after the first game of a new season. We have key players almost ready to come back, new players to bed in, new recruits yet to be signed and a manager who seems to actually give a brick. Yes it was a brick result but we’re one game in. This won’t continue, I think we alll know that. And if it does, well then we’ll deserve to be where we are
 
If only Richarlison or Bergvall could hold the ball up and break the lines as well as this Kane fella…

I agree, this season is going to be a rollercoaster of results, given the new manager / new squad and we still have areas we can improve on/unsure on

Kinsky needs to be given a run of games to see if he's good enough as well, which will impact results.
 
Hopefully we value certain players more, especially those that didn't play or are out on loan. This is not Football Manager of EAFC. For me Lange should walk.
 
Ah I've missed this! The real football is back, threads full of how brick everyone is, how manager got x y and z wrong. Hopefully not too long before the threads are littered with how wonderful everyone is :)

Obviously the optics weren't good yesterday, but let's be real we are undercooked for starting the season and in addition important players not playing and signings to come in. Not in the least bit concerned for the season, just like I wouldn't have been thinking we were going to have an amazing season had we won this 3-0. Onwards and upwards.....

There is, RDZ/Fan base/Club can still see the work needed

5 of those starting yesterday were nowhere near top 6 level (yet in some cases ) and it's a reminder of that.

The entire front section of the team was abysmal, I expect it to be resolved party by Saudi Sportswashing Machine next week.

It's going to be like Mopos first season, RDZ needs to see who he can trust.

Yeah, it’s way too early to judge, of course.

That said, it was worrying. A bit of fight is a minimum requirement, and there was none. Our defending of set pieces was all over the place and we failed to tweak what we were doing in-game, which cost us at least one goal (as highlighted by Sky). We didn’t seem to have a plan to counteract what Brentford would obviously do.

RDZ’s ability to select a different team was limited (although personally I’d have started Danso), but the set-up was odd. And I’m not sure “We weren’t ready” is an out; his job is to ensure the players available ARE ready. A lot of those who kicked off he’d had all summer.

It was a very bad day at the office, and 5 or 6-1 wouldn’t have been an unrealistic result, hence perhaps what you have called the “vociferous” response. The context of the last two seasons obviously comes into play too.

We will need to make strides forward quickly or we are going to find ourselves under a lot of media pressure (we’re already hearing this morning that Tottenham were soundly beaten “despite splashing out over £300 million over the summer” - which is wrong in a number of ways, but which is the start of a narrative that most reporters will want to pursue).

Hopefully we’ll see better as players return, starting on Wednesday.
 
If you think that watching the game was bad for your health ... half time I took the opportunity to take my evening medication for my heart condition so wandered into the kitchen, moaning at the wife about how awful it was. Distracted by the carnage that I had just witnessed, I suddenly realised that I had accidentally taken the medication for the following morning so had actually taken double the usual 24 hour dosage. Phoned 111 for advice who insisted on calling an ambulance and so missed the second half while the paramedics carried out various tests. Apart from feeling stupid and senile, I'm fine. I've sworn that I won't make the same mistake again but I've yet to decide whether that's mixing up my medication or watching Spurs. First match of the season and they already have me trying to top myself (albeit unwittingly). Ironically one of the paramedics was a Spurs fan who was just as interested in asking me how they played as how I felt.

But its also a lesson having a well run club, with continuity, a plan and clear vision. They have been a steady club for a few years now.

We are the antithesis of this; new coach, new players, starting all over again for the 8th season over, deadwood/not good enough players. This wasnt going to be fixed in 2 months - we probably wont see a consistent, decent side until next year. Society these days wants instant fixes and results to everything - this isnt going to be the case here. Yes we have spent but we have also recouped. Spending big on two midfielders, one of which isnt fit to start, doesnt fix us into a top 4 team.

You simply dont take a team finishing 17th last two years and within 3months (with a world cup) make them into top 5 challengers.

Thats true and balanced. I think the worry comes in the fact that the performance was so bad and there was so little bite or fight.

There are clearly things impact the start of the season absolutely
