The first time I saw Sanchez I knew he wasn’t good. I had a season ticket that season. He seemed to struggle with the ball in the air. So I had little faith with him. Vertonghen showed how good he was that season guiding Sanchez and helping us remain relatively strong defensively that season still.

I mean it's language thing top means exactly that; top, not middle not bottom but actually at the top. Why he can't just be an exciting prospect (if that's how some feel) I don't know? Tottenham fans always have to go too far. Last season Mikey Moore was a "generational talent". Does my head in.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, I just think a little bit of realism is good and that would actually lead to nice surprises (a la Kane) rather than disappointments like Edwards, Onamah and hundred other developing players overhyped by our fan base.

I think Tel will go further than Odobert. I sense a different drive in Tel than Odobert.

At 19, Tel was playing his 2nd season for Bayern (won title at 18), played 41 games, scored 10 goals. Tel was at a better level a while back, needs to push on.

Strange to show those stats per 100 touches. I guess maybe it’s trying to control for different teams having different amounts of possession. But it might also disproportionately benefit players whose style is just not to get on the ball much, which might actually be a downside.

Either way, if you look per 90 mins instead Tel comes out as fairly average:

Tel at 19 playing for a side that actually tries to play football, and has possession

There is a player there, do we know if he will make that step up, if in a better managed side, with a better manager he can cope with PL and push on? don't know, but looking at any of our players stats that include last season (or last two seasons) will not give you a real perspective of what they can be.

Tel is similar to Gallagher is a player I think will do well with a better, more attacking and technical team around him.

I think if Udogie can stay fit , he can really get the chemistry going with Tel.

Udogie happy charging outside down the touchline or the inside channel.
Similarly Tel can mix it up as well.
Keeps the opposition guessing/confused.

Both can play with energy.

Yeah that’s fair. Was just pointing out that the original stats for last season were potentially misleading for that season. Agree that season isn’t a fair reflection of his potential though, either way.

I actually think that’s been his barrier. I’ve seen people on here say he was quick last season but if you watched closely he was losing foot races with average full backs so if he’s added a yard then I believe he has a chance as that’s what will take you up a level.

Whilst I’ve pushed for attacking signings, I think Tel has done enough to deserve a run at the start of the season. Aside of pace, he looks like he’s developed all round so it will be interesting to see whether that development is big enough to threaten Premeir League defences.

Ps. He also looks a much better player with a left footed left back who wants to join in. Who knew.

We need depth at 11 and 9, adhering to this summer's policy of a general upgrade in quality, but as those of us have been saying about Tel for some time, given a chance he has the ability to do something transformational to his game this season, in the same way (please don't think he's as good, he's not yet) that Bale went from being on the fringes to being the best footballer at the club. Tel has the mindset, he has the skill and he's now starting to believe.

I have a feeling he and Tonali are going to be out best players this season - I've no crystal ball but it's just a hunch.
 
Bale had demonstrated that extreme left foot from early on, and I think there was always the sense that it was just a matter of waiting for it all to click with him. Tel's improved and apparently still improving, but I don't personally have the feeling there's something transformational coming with him. Then again, I never thought Kane was anything special the first few times I watched him, so what do I know?

The the thing everyone seems to forget about Bale is that he caught our eye as a young future LB who was actually playing LM. All of his promise was the attacking aspect. Then we bought him and actually tried playing him at LB and he was pretty useless there. It wasn't until we played him at LM (where all his Southampton promise actually came from) that we saw his true potential.

It was nothing to do with him coming of age or developing something extra to his game. It was Harry Redknapp finally playing him where he was best suited and playing Ekotto (the better LB) at LB.

Not the way I remember it at Saints actually. I though their left side was Bale (LB) and Walcott (LM) originally.

I thought he exclusively played as a LB at Saints.

As you say, an entire career proved that he was better further up though.
