I have to say, this whole story (as it unfolds) leaves me wondering how many more Ardays there are. I'd say many in all walks.

My personal interest in this would lie in the unquantifiable i.e. how much of this was malice versus a couple of fibs which very rapidly went off the rails as others saw the 'benefits' inflating his story could provide optically, and knowing he wasn't going to push back? Of course he cannot claim total innocence per se, we all know at a certain point when the envelope is being pushed at 100mph, however it does feel like there have been a lot of other agendas served here at the eventual expense of this guy?

Those in power at Cambridge and in other areas wanted him to be the second coming, they used him as a poster boy for their agenda as much as he was to blame IMO

It certainly looks like that the more I dig. And to someone who 'might' be vulnerable to start with, that's a powerful force. If proven, those in power art Cambridge need to be held fully and publicly accountable (in fairness to @robp135 this was the main thrust of his viewpoint and I agree now I've looked into it a little more).

Yep Cambridge is the biggest villain in all this. It’s almost impossible that they were not aware but were more than happy to role him out to make themselves look good.

There is a fine line between being polite and kind, paticuarly when taking into account a persons background and in this case a potential disability. But that can also backfire. Learning from mistakes is actually really important and if nobody ever points them out to you due to inadvertent bigotry it’s actually quite cruel.

I think that's very fair.
It seems to me that there has been a high degree of cruelty in allowing Aday to keep going down that path.
 
Is this story improtant to some people as they are convinced white academics are oppressed by DEI? I think so. Fukin tinpot macarons. This is a one off story. 1% of British professors are black. 1%.

There is a very real alt angle to this which is I wonder how many countless white professors and scholars have stacked resumes/lied to be in their positions and not got a 10th of the attention.

It is really unfortunate that Aday lied about what he did, it is equally unfortunate that Cambridge turned him into a 'diversity project pin-up' and pumped him full of seeming indemnification, and it is very unfortunate that now we will see distrust of black and DEI appointments rise further as a consequence.

Black people make up 4% of the population. Many of whom have come here from Africa in the last 20 years. Not with phds.

I think it is a very interesting story TBH, and personally, what I have taken from it is that Cambridge has actually committed an enormously poor series of actions that deserve to be spotlit as to my eye, their enabling of Aday is abusive and 'user' behavior which in the end has left him in the crosshairs of an angry public and angry time. I hope the Cambridge 'elite' get hammered over this. They deserve to.
