FIFA: Destroying Football Since 1904

the problem wasn't when Poch took the job, Biden was still POTUS then, the issue is that he didn't resign at any point, after all of the despicable things the trump government has done, particularly to foreigners working in the US, he stayed silent, kept taking the money

then allowing this Balogun situation to unfold without speaking out against trump, without taking control and owning it, without doing the right thing and leaving the guy out of the Belgium game, he just kept his head down, trumps bitch

I said I'd lost some respect for him, after writing that, I realise I've lost all respect for him, he's a coward

Unfortunately Trump is the President and until this term ends, he will impact all of our lives in this way. People just have to get on with it.

I think it’s completely unfair to expect Poch to ‘speak out’ and become a political actor when he just wants to do his job.

The issue is Trump. Trump impacts everything he touches because the American people elected someone like him to the most powerful office in the world, and he doesn’t mind using that power to satisfy his own urges to throw his weight around. On a wide array of subjects. But people have to be able to get on with their lives. And that’s all most people are trying to do. It will end when Trump’s term ends.

Expecting people to resign and speak out against something that you don’t politically agree with is not a fun road to go down.

Trump is a bully, bullies only get away with bullying when people don't stand up to them.

Not speaking out is compliance, you can't be a high profile leader and keep your head down, you either have principles or you don't, having a platform and not using it to defend those who can't defend themselves is pretty low imo.

Trump is going to continue to bully until his term ends. He revels in it. The coach of a sport he doesn’t follow speaking against him, a non US native at that, would become a prime target for hatred from the absolute worst parts of his base.

It ends when his term ends. Unfortunately he has the power until that happens. To an extent everyone is corrupted as long as he is in post, because they have to deal with it. But that is my point, everyone is trying to just get on with things as best they can. He was voted in, and it only ends when his term ends.

I agree, but there are statues in the world for those that do

Agreed. But I don’t think it’s fair to expect Poch of all people to be one of those people speaking out; and to literally lose all respect for him if he doesn’t.

He’s not a US native, and not a US citizen. I assume he has moved his family to the US. If he resigned and ‘spoke out’ against Trump, he would become a target. His family would become targets, and their Visas would likely be revoked. Some of the worst parts of his base would harass them and abuse them. Why are we asking a football manager to put himself and his family through at best massive inconvenience and at worst abuse and danger?

I agree, but eventually there will be a hero from football who stands up to stuff.

My biggest issue in the end with Sol Campbell wasn't that he left us, it was because he called the FA Racist and not making him captain, after his career, which made him rich, he protected his wealth, then stood up for his morals. Imagine at 28, he spoke out and the impact for black youth and the hero levels he would have received if he done it at the time???

Someone is going to get a bloody nose for being the first through the wall at a Qatar, Russia, USA style WC............when they do, they will be legendary way beyond what sport gets them IMO

If one person stands up, it’s more likely a second person stands up too, then a third.

All movements have to start somewhere, and this summer Poch had arguably the highest platform available from which to get the ball rolling.

I see where you’re coming from. And I’d certainly agree that anyone who did do that would certainly deserve extra credit and praise for being one of the first to speak out and make the world a better place.

I just think that, for a lot of people, they are just trying to get on with their lives. They don’t want politics to even touch it, it’s just that sometimes they have to exist within it. So I don’t think it’s fair to lose all respect for someone not calling out the values you happen to agree with. Poch in this instance is a football manager trying to manage a football team. I’m almost certain he won’t agree with many of the Trump admin policies, but to call him out is to put him in a position he doesn’t need to be in unless he actually wanted to be in politics.

Give extra credit for the people that do speak out. Don’t lose respect for people just trying to live. Is my view.

We're all in politics all of the time, life is political, what we stand up against, and what we put with defines us.
