Andy Robertson

That Sessegnon bloke looks handy, we should buy him.

It sticks in the throat slightly that the two best English left-backs in my lifetime (in my view) both played for the Arse; of course, Sansom does not count, because his best years were before football was invented in 1992.
I remember being hugely disgusted when I found out that Hoddle’s England roommate was Kenny Samson.

Yes I'm not quite sure what we are doing LB squad number wise. It's too many players for 1 position. Tbh I would love to have been bold this season and gone with just Udogie and Souza. Obviously that isn't the plan but I don't quite understand Udogie, Robertson and Davies for LB and that's assuming Souza goes out in loan.

Seems like overkill with 3 injury prone players for LB and the hole that they aren't all injured at the same time. 1 of them being past it anyway and potentially a 2nd also having seen better days.

All a bit strange imo.

I think this is a make or break season for Udogie injury-wise, and the planning appears to reflect a concern that he is going to be injured again???

I do hear that, but Davies is equally injury prone as well as being past it. Robertson has increasingly had injuries as well. Seems like we are going to hope one of them is available at all times. Seems like a bit of weird approach to me, but we'll see how this is all going to play out.

The concern for me is that if Udogie gets his traditional injury then we are effectively relying on Robertson week in week out who was poor last season, and sceptical about him getting any better this season.

I'm assuming Souza will go out on loan, who to me looked like the perfect understudy - young and talented. If he goes on loan to a PL club then fair enough, that will be of benefit to us in the coming years. If it's a loan abroad I won't understand and would prefer him as backup to an on the decline Robertson even with the experience he brings....

For me, it's about 2 things.

The first is about the drop off in quality between a first choice player and their deputy. I think a lot of us felt that even though you could argue that Spence is of a very decent level, when you place him as a left back we lost something down the left when compared to what Udogie brings. I actually worry that the current Robbo and Davies can't match those levels either though they are natural lefties. That being said, we could see a more laser focused Udogie next season fighting to keep his place,.

The second is about flooding the bench with senior players and the kids not getting their chance. I'm not sure we will aprpeciate a scenario where Udogie starts and both Robbo and Davies are taking 2 slots on the bench. Perhaps one scenario where we have injuries in the left attacking berths. Udogie and Robbo on the pitch together then becomes interesting in the same way we would say about Porro and Spence doubling up.

Of course, all of this assumes Souza heads out on loan.
