AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

I really dont get the dempsey signing to be honest, seems like overkill to me

Quality player, glad to have him on board, but just dont see the motivation in getting him when we have Sigurdsson playing virtually the same role

More set up for a 4-3-3 now

Dembele can play the deep playmaker role and also cover AM and either wide forward position. Dempsey can cover entire front 3 or AM. Think with everyone fit I could see:

......Bale.............Ade..............Lennon

....Sigurdsson....Sandro.......Dembele

BAE......Vertonghen...Kaboul.........Walker

........................Lloris

But we've got quite a bit of interchangeable cover throughout the squad now

it's called depth.

every successful team needs it.

To me, it's another signing of a good player on a good business deal but one that will probably see him not get the games he expected, and move on somewhere else pretty soon. We've had so many of these players come to us. Danny Murphy. Steven Pienaar. This reminds me of that.

Yes every team needs depth, but I think that should come from a few good versatile back ups. What we seem to have done is piled up players that won't often have a chance of playing, and some of them will get sold off in a couple of years having not got the games they wanted. No team really has back ups that are as good as the first choice players in most positions.

People in the transfer thread were saying we needed right back cover, as if Naughton wasn't exactly that! But it was like they expected someone already on Walker's level to be happy to sit on our bench. Never going to happen.

I literally have no idea how Dembele is going to fit into our team, and from AVB's quotes about him he talks about his versatility but doesn't seem particularly happy to have him. All seems like a bit of a mess that's tough to work out right now.

I don't know that it's a mess... it seems to me as though our incoming players can be thought of as like-for-like for our outgoing players (in terms of their natural position):

VDV ---- Sigurdsson
King ---- Vertonghen
Adebayor ---- Adebayor (!)
Modric ---- Dembele
Kranjcar ---- Dempsey

We've also added an extra keeper in Lloris.

And we've got rid of Pienaar (had already left on loan), Corluka (we have Naughton for depth at right-back), Nelsen (not needed), Bassong (not needed), Saha (not really needed).

You could argue that GDS would have been useful to have around, but he'd never been a major part of our squad.

So purely in terms of the number of first-team players we have for each position, the squad hasn't really changed IMO.

This is purely speculation on my part.

AVB is supposedly very meticulous in his preparations.

In the last 2-4 weeks, he and his coaching team would have thoroughly assessed the situation regarding which players would fit into his preferred system and made recommendations to Levy about areas that would need strengthening and possible players that would come in and do the job. I reckon Moutinho was a critical cog in that.

He would have also worked out various permutations and alternatives should some of his transfer targets not been met. He may have been impressed with Bale's skill, pace, power and heading abilities and Gareth has proven he knows where the goal is. Depending on the opposition, injuries or trying alternative tactics, Bale might be the one to replace Ade in the middle with Dempsey coming in on the left side in the front three.

:) whats wrong with you, AVB wanted Damiao and Moutinho and got Dempsey and Dembele. I feel for the guy

How do you know he didn't want Dempsey and Dembele. Both of them seem good fits in his system and cover off a number of positions. I think we agreed on targets but we also would have agreed on back-up options.

AVB's not an idiot he might have wanted Moutinho but he knew he was at the limit of player we could get. It was always unlikely he said so himself

As with others, I think we have a first eleven capable of grabbing 4th IF we stay fit etc, however we don't have a strong second eleven from an attacking/creative perspective and, although it just a personal position, the thought of Townsend, Livermore et al featuring is of concern. I can't think they get into the first 22 of many if any of the other big 5/6 teams.
Moutinho would have tipped it but as always....

can dempsey actually play on the wing? are people sure it isnt a wonky that we will be playing? as in a 4231 wonky

I think he can play very well cutting in from the left. Haven't seen him much on the right.

Most teams that play 4-2-3-1 use one or two wide men that cut inside onto their best foot. AVB has used Hulk and Sturridge in those kinds of roles before. Wouldn't surprise me.
