I would have thought it obvious that we DIDN"T know what Moutinho (or rather his agent) would demand - if, indeed, personal terms are the sticking point. No way that we would have wasted so much time negotiating with Porto otherwise.

Likely scenario is that Moutinho's camp indicated that they would be prepared to sign for a certain salary but, once VDV was sold and as the deadline loomed, they moved the goalposts and are trying to play hardball with Levy - believing themselves to be in a position to dictate terms.

Problem is that Levy doesn't fold in the face of such tactics.

Thing is, if we are never going to splash 22m on player, then we can't compete anywhere near the top four. Even Villa have paid 24m for a player. That's the reality of the market we are working in now - fees and wages have risen astronomically in the era of Emirates Marketing Project, Chelsea, PSG, even QPR using sugar daddy money. Our record 16m is nothing for a player now...hell, even the young players are ridiculously expensive now, like A-Ox and Butland. Even United are getting tinkled at how much their youth are demanding.

There are still cheap gems out there, but we need to overhaul our scouting system drastically, and be able to pick up signings like Michu and Cabaye for 2m, while continuing a strong focus on youth development. That'll be risky, but we have to gamble in order to compete against those with far more resources than we will ever have.

does anyone just hate the whole daniel levy wage structure flimflam. old fashioned ways unfortunately will mean nothing more than a good old fashioned mid table finish im afraid.

Does it worry anyone else that AVB seems to be stripping the team of our creative flair and replacing them with scuttly hard working players who aren't particularly outstanding at anything??

I've been expecting it since the end of last season. Not ITK, just a feeling. I feel priveleged to have seen him play but I found that the "must be selected if fit deal" strangled our options. I don't like using the word legend, it's one of the most abused words in the modern day, he's an icon though. :)
