Cristian Romero

Clearly needs some tips from MvdV on how to place his shots out of the GK’s reach…

So good to have him back. Hopefully he gets through the international break strong and fit.

He obviously wouldn't have prevented the goal from the corner. But if there's one player in our squad with the composure and quality to help us keep the ball in the dying minutes a goal up instead of just coming under more sustained pressure and concede set pieces it's him.

Vital to how we play.

I saw the Argies are going to Angola for a friendly on Friday?! Seems a rather odd choice to me, but what do I know. Nothing dodgy to see there. Ranked 89th in the world. Paying £13m to attract Messi and friends.

At least it is only 1 game and it is almost in our time zone

Hope they take their anti-malarial meds!

Criticise him for Ruiz's goal, he shouldn't have attempted to pass to an already under pressure Sarr. Even criticise him for the corner that led to their second although, I don't really agree with that line of thinking. There are so many things that happen post his involvement that led to the goal.

What I can't accept is criticism for the penalty. It's such an emotional response. If he doesn't try to block the shot we get their first goal that came from uncontested shot. The question we should be asking is why is our defence so easily breached that Romero is the person who blocks Kvara for the first attack and then no one reacts and he's still the person trying to block Vitinha?

If he doesn't block the shot Vitinha is scoring, so pen or no pen, they had already breeched and were about to score.

Spot on. Look closely and the pass to Sarr wasn't his preferred one. He immediately looked to Bents who stood frozen rather than move a couple of yards to receive the ball. Bents allowed the opposition player to be directly between him and Romero. He made his captain look a mug but Romero needed to defend first. These things happen and there is a time to clear your lines.

I'd be tempted to rest Romero at the weekend to help him find the next level of performance. Let him reflect on these key moments where he is making bad decisions. It's not as if there were only 2 in the entire game.

Even with the Ruiz goal like you say Bentancur gave him no option, but the real instigator of the calamity was Vicario who has a vision of the pitch and still passed to Romero. He should be looking at the game and anticipating what the options are. He basically passed to Romero when Romero didn't really have any options so the likelyhood of losing the ball was very high.

Romero was still the main culprit because he had the chance to get rid, but Bentancur and Vicario would be close 2nds in terms of culpability for that goal.

Just classic Romero really. This is why the 'world class' debate always crops up with him. He will make a couple of top class performances and there will be those announcing 'This is why he's world class'. He will then revert to his usual error prone performances showing why he in fact is not WC.

Hes capable of top performances but you never truly know what you're going to get from him, probably a focus thing. To be world class you know 8 or 9 times out of 10 said player is going to perform to a high standard - that simply is something he is incapable of doing. That being said I don't think we will be getting better, so just have to accept somewhat his brain farts....

He is suspended for the weekend

He wants the headlines, not the responsibility.
The second goal he rushes out to harass vintinha, Bentancur drops in, then Romero abandons the harass to run back to his position and blocks Bentancur.
The pass to Sarr was just dumb, but not unusual.
He's unlucky with the pen, but again him and Bentancur are in each other's way.
He's chaos when we need calm.

Is it too much to ask for our midfielders to receive the ball in a situation like that? Sarr was showing for it, had a yard on the opposition player when it was passed IIRC.

Perhaps Romero should know better and only play that pass if the receiving player is Gray? Or can he play that pass to Bergvall? Bentancur? Palhinha? An on form Bissouma has no issues receiving that pass.

If that pass is too much for our midfielders to handle we need different midfielders imo.

I’m not sure it’s anywhere near as good a pass as you think
And also he is receiving it whilst having someone behind him and also in front of him
The pass would need to be amazing which it wasn’t
And his movement would too
Bergvall would have tried to turn with it for example

We've seen Bissouma receive those passes and lose the ball immediately the same with Bergvall, Gray I don't think we've seen him dispossessed like that. Bentancur definitely as well. So if we are going to attempt those kinds of passes, then yes we do need to up the technique level of the squad. I'd argue though that it was a relatively high risk pass for a potential low reward. If Sarr's body shape had been side on the pass would have made more sense, but facing his own goal. Once he gets the ball he's only ever going to pass it back from where it came from, a bit pointless really. PSG had some really good moments playing out from the back, somewhat show how its done but even they did cough it up for Muani's second goal.
