OMT: Mighty Spurs vs Brighton & Hove Albion

We didn't play well but they scored 2 penalties and 30 yard screamer. Don't see how our defending would have changed those goals (penalties were 2 dumb decisions from attacking players.)
Yeah but why wasn't our either of our central defenders picking up their big target man ? Ferguson was in acres of space and our attacking midfielder who was wrong side had to sprint back , desperately trying to get a goal preventing challenge in.

I hated every minute of the game tonight.

It's too high stakes now, the result is everything, we have half a chance of regaining relevance and getting back in the CL next year, that's everything, I don't care what it looks like, I just want the points
Go and support Contes next team or Joses Roma then.
Your aren't going to get the points in the way you want with Angeball.

Just watching replay, and Son is so totally unaware and ball-watching for their first goal. He barely moves during the whole attack and leaves Udogie with two to deal with. Yes it should never have got to the stage where the ball could be played across, but if he just runs back a few more yards, the space for that pass isn't there.

Good spot however, we've played like this all season under Ange - even in games where we've won. Watch all the games and you'll see how the back post is often unattended while the overload is in the box, while Son (and Kulu) are coveting spaces in front of the defence as an outlet and waiting to counter.

I don't think it's Son's fault more than how they're set up to defend.

But they didn't score a goal from that. I'm not saying we can't defend better, but I don't put a whole lot of blame on our defenders today.

We were poor in the first half and didn’t deserve to get a result. We created too little and opened up releatedly defensively. Injuries make it understandable but I am reluctant to wholly blame that, likewise I won’t blame the huge refereeing in inconsistency. Both apply to all teams and it’s about what we do inspite of those issues as there will always be excuses if we are desperate to find them.

Our first team were paid professionals and of a high enough level that we ought to be able to perform to a higher level than we did. We didn’t. It can happen and we need to work to improve on the level that we showed. We need to raise our game and put in a significantly better performance against Bournemouth. We can’t afford to lose more points. I would be tempted to drop any player that might have fatigue and start the likes of Veliz and Donley and use this level of energy against Bournemouth if there’s a risk that our players otherwise turn up tired to the next match.

Antonio? Antonio! We can see you!!!

The problem with Royal is he does not have the nouse to play as a centre back. In the Villa game TV here highlighted how his positioning was all wrong for what ended up being a narrow offside goal. I'm no fan of Dier, but he has played the position. If Royal was good on the ball and excellent in picking a pass it would be different, but I see no sign of that. He is more likely to try an outrageous flick that gifts a goal imho. If you are Bournemouth watching today's game, and then see the same back four, aren't you licking your chops? To your point, giving a young player a chance might pay off unless they really are poor. I remember Paul Miller making a solid debut away at Arsenal as a 19 year old ....

Maxi wouldn’t have lasted today. He’d have been eviscerated by social media ’coaches’…remember he always had one dodgy moment per match, which we’d usually survive but occasionally didn’t.

Lots of complaints about Johnson not getting out to Estupnian, but Kulusevski is just as guilty in my opinion. Maybe neither of them would have got there, but just a sign of the lack of energy that killed us in many areas.

Of course we can afford to drop points.

Where is all this win now stuff coming from? Have we not been listening to the manager? It's going to take a while for us to get the squad and the ethos nailed. Then watch us.

Ange has been consistent for months on this,. Also has nobody noticed that we have a almost a full team out injured?

A lot of people need to be less excited when we win and less despairing and demanding when we lose.

We’re now six points off Liverpool with Liverpool only having lost the match against us. Not sure how we can afford to drop more points on them.

We have to be constantly aspiring to be successful. Yes, we will likely drop points and fall short but does that mean we shouldn’t constantly be aiming high?!

We do have a lot of players missing but it’s what we can do with what we have that’s important. Is it going to be easy? Of course not. But football is a squad game and if we can’t trust our backups then I hope we move them on at the next possible opportunity and upgrade them to players tht we can trust and that are less likely to fail us.

Will that be a quick process? No. But again it’s what we need to be aiming for. Yes, it will likely take a couple of seasons to work through this squad but once we get it right we have already seen just how promising life could be for us.

So many of us, myself included, live vicariously at least in part through Spurs. If we didn’t we likely wouldn’t support the team. But it’s the vested emotions that bring us joy/sadness according to our success/failure on the pitch. It can be tempered and we have to be rational about it all but we always want the best for us and it will always have at least some impact on our mood as we cheer for goals that we score and feel disappointed when we concede.

We need to return to winning ways at the weekend. Maybe that’s an exaggeration and of course we don’t ‘need’ to BUT we have to be giving all that we can to return to winning ways. We need to aim high.

Agreed.

I just think it was a lack of energy and urgency and it just seemed everyone had a mere until last 15min. Maybe coupled with Brighton tapping out. Us not shooting. The silly pens. Not tracking back etc.

It was a bad night......lo celso starts next game. Kulu may now learn never to pull a shirt again. Hopefully people will have legs on Sunday, (don't see how, as we gonna have to keep with most of the team again)

Fingers crossed we get new faces who can get on board quick. Learn how to be smarter in standing up more and kicking back in a sneaky way.

Other than the ref for Pool and one other ref at a game who wasn't too bad (i forget it who)it just seems they have a weekly meeting to be just massive macarons. The way each week's teams can kick us and stay on pitch and we get yellows for sneezing. Is really something. I've never been this annoyed in previous seasons each week with the refs in our games.

If that is instruction rather than poor defending, that’s shocking. You’re allowing them a free man in our box. The lad had the time to take a touch, set himself and rifle it in. That’s all sorts of wrong.

Again, that’s frightening how much space he has. Yeah it’s a worldie and it’s not a particularly dangerous place but no way he should have that much time and space on the ball to advance. Gomes had acres of space on Saturday too in a much more dangerous spot.

Are you saying someone should be marking Estupinian or closing him down faster?

No CB on pitch, in the games where we have had no recognized CB one of the "themes" has been no one coming out to close stuff (either it's communication or lack of understanding the role). Romero closes a lot down way outside box.

Royal actually did very well in at least 2-3 exposed 1:1 scenarios against their striker, kept pace, stayed on his feet, just slowed him down enough to let others catch up.

Bad day at the office, it happens, some observations

- despite the naive tag and expectations that we get done on counter, that wasn't really the story tonight. Two penalties, a set piece goal and bad marking at far post cost us.
- Dunk tackle was a red, at 2-0 they had 11 fouls and no yellows, we had 3 and 2 yellows, it's a joke
- Vicario is the best keeper in the league
- Udogie was really good
- Not great games for Deki, Son or Johnson
- If we play PEH, we need to start GLC

As crap as we were, we actually could have scraped something out of that, something to keep in mind vs. brick days with Jose/Conte where we could have played for 6 hours and never scored.

As poor as it was I hope it will bring home to everyone that we desperately need a centreback, you can have the best fullbacks in the world but without a decent centre to your defence you will lose more than you win.
