Transfer rumours - summer 2021 edition

Does seem more and more to me that arsenal are doing what we did 5/6 years ago and bustling an English core
Hmm. We really do need to be mindful of the HG quota in our squad.

If Brighton really have rejected a £40 million bid for White, then Lamptey isn't going to be bought for a heavily structured £20 million deal.
Is White worth more than £40m?

White's a good player, but if we can get an equivalent overseas player for £25m I see us taking the latter option

On English players, unless we get them before they make the England squad (or similar level) we're currently priced out of most of them. That means:
- our first 11 largely needs to be non HG players (as we cant afford the HG players)
-...which means a lot of our back-up players need to be HG

I personally think he is the best English CB in the league and he is 23
You would have him for the bulk of his career

Do you see us paying say £50m for him, rather than say £25m - £30m for an overseas CB though? I'm not saying which is right/wrong, but I think we'd opt for the latter, particularly this summer

I think he is worth it
We need English players as you say and he is one for the next 5 years

You're probably right on value...I just think that this summer, with our finances and the number of players likely targeted, he'll be out of our reach at £50m+. I can see us thinking that rather spending £50m say on him, we'd rather spend £30m on an oveseas CB and £20m on someone else. Could obviously be a false economy if those other players fail...

On the non-HG issue, we might be able to patch through it if the players we ship out are mainly non-HG and actually a lot of our players on facing the exit door are non-HG: Dier, Aurier, Sanchez, Sissoko, Lamela, Moura etc. I could see Hart and Winks staying for another year for this sole reason

Summer 2004.
A certain team bought:
Paul Robinson
Sean Davis
Marton Fulop
Pedro Mendes
Leigh Mills
Erik Edman
Nourredine Naybet
Thimothee Atouba
Rodrigo Defendi
Michael Carrick
Noe Pamarot
Calum Davenport
Reto Ziegler
Spase Delevski

How did that work out... I'll save you the trouble of looking it up

Premier League 9th
FA Cup Sixth round
League Cup Quarter-finals

I think their having season ticket selling issues
I know there was a kick back that their prices haven’t gone down despite having no Europe
Strange a lot of leaks have come out today for players they couldn’t afford last season

It's normally fan pressure that forces them into paying over the odds for someone they don't need late in the window

I fully agree
But I do think 4 of the right signings that are where for more than just making us a place or two better is the right investment
The team can be fixed with some cheaper signings for right now
And that may be of eve for long term but we know shifting those players can be hard
I’d rather buy the more expensive players who are better if we can afford it. But it’s not that simple of course

It is
But their getting that pressure now
And I’m sure that their buy now pay very later ain’t working with English sides

Arsenal restructured their stadium debt last year so that the interest rates are drastically reduced and they no longer have to hold £36m against a bond which will have released that in cash.
I suspect they are also taking out some new loans to cover purchases as their debt ratio is (or at least was) very low indeed.

You only need 8 association trained players to be able to operate a full 25 man squad....

Hart
Rodon (counts for PL)
Sessegnon
Skipp
Tanganga
Dele
Kane

Done.

If Kane goes then it would bring in a considerable amount of money that would allow us to buy some English players.

You are aware you only listed 7 ...

(Unless Done is an academy product)

That doesn't tell the whole story though... The season before that we finished 14th. So that huge number of players gave us a 5 place improvement in league position (and probably would've been more if Levy had gone with Arnesen's suggestion of Jol as manager instead of bringing in Santini).

Then in 2005, we had another massive influx... this time the magic number of 11 players in:

Tom Huddlestone
Paul Stalteri
Aaron Lennon
Teemu Tainio
Wayne Routledge
Edgar Davids
Lee Young-Pyo
Jermaine Jenas
Grzegorz Rasiak
Hossam Ghaly
Danny Murphy

We then improved again from 9th to 5th (with 5th being absolute heartbreak)
