Daniel Levy - Chairman

- 17 major honors in 139 years
- 2 league wins
- Our best decade being over 50+ years ago

Either underachievement has been part for the club for a lot longer than current administration or we are not as big a club as people believe we are.

This is the longest trophy drought since probably the 50s IIRC...in terms of overall Trophies i believe Emirates Marketing Project and Chelsea only very recently surpassed us.

We were 4th/5th in terms of overall trophies until recently. In teh scheme of things in English football, we are a big club, but have been in the doldrums for too long

Every team can win or lose games that's football. But when you've got a golden ticket to 'push on'# and you still play it safe citing "that time we nearly went bust" or "we can't do a Leeds" etc etc then we all know the end results.

Remember when we couldn't seal a deal for player x or y because "we can't offer them European football".
Then that morphed to "we cannot offer them CL football/wages".
Then that morphed into "we have two big neighbours to compete against who can offer CL football".
Then that became "we are the only London club where you can see CL football, but we won't take advantage of it because we have a stadium that's gone over budget and been delayed" etc etc

You know the drill...

P.S. - Why are you mentioning 84 and 91? We actually won trophies in those years..agree re 1987 though, that was the epitome of 'Spurzy'...
What did we win in 87???
We had a number of league cup semis and even gave out ticket info in one
We lost the cup final
And we could have won the league (squad was broken by then)

It's not just 20 years, its 120

In terms of league titles, sure. But as i said above, Chelski and Man Cityu have only very recently surpassed us in terms of overall trophies.

In English football we have been (are?) a big side...just are having our worst trophyless run since possible the second world war

We've got to 5 finals under enic. The 20 years before that we got to 5 finals. It was the 25 years before that when we were doing really well. But arsenal, chelsea, utd, liverpool, city now have had far better glory years. Ours are more akin to evertons.

Due to geography we have a large fan base but we are not as big a club as many of our supporters think we are. The expectations of trophies is a bit weird. Especially in a time of mega clubs funded by countries and where cl has distorted the market. Ofcourse we should always want more. But expecting it will just leave you angry and disappointed.

Absolutely - entitlement leads to unrealistic expectations leads to disappointment and anger, that was the point

Someone else had done the math (believe it's accurate), it tells a story, 65% of all the trophies in club's history won in 30 out of 139 years.

50's - 1 trophy
60's - 5 trophies
70's - 3 trophies
80's - 3 trophies
90's - 2 trophies
00's - 1 Trophy
10's - 0 trophies

My doubts are still there with his input on matters on the pitch. Have we not been here before with Arnesen, Commoli etc ... It just depends on how much rope he is willing to give.

I think as a business man and a money man he is impeccable. Incredible even. But he really is out of his depth with matters on the pitch. We can have a budget and a transfer strategy but him doing the deals and overlooking player purchases has not worked and needs to take a step back.
The remit for the new guy does seem more comprehensive that what we think we had in the past

I hope that you are right and time will tell.

If and a big IF, Levy and Co taking the lead on the commercial side of things, with a DOF solely responsible in utilizing the transfer and wage budget we could well be on to better things in the near future.

Hey we don’t know what we don’t know

I have always trusted DL to look after the club, couldn’t be a safer pair of hands in charge financially, and during this COVID crisis particularly. But I can't take the end part of the video message seriously - he's a fan: pah! If I was in charge, as a fan, I'd have spent like Mansour or Abramovich. I'd probably bankrupt the club though!

I have been very critical of Levy's failure -at key moments- to either sell players or buy players. But I think it is equally important to recognize what the bloke has done for the club, given we are not oligarched or barroned.

I also think it is important to recognize what a fantastic job has been done on the structure of the club, the training ground, the stadium, the partnerships, all of it. Covid turned the beer money and gigs off. No-one knew it was coming. Even the debt has been restructured so as we won't go under. So let's recognize that. All of it. Because it is amazing.

He is being absolutely honest re: private, and furthermore (what I am about to say is a fact) he is not the best of communicators in the sense of warmth. He is quite shy in that regard and would much rather not engage. It is a personality thing. The video? I am going to guess this was not his idea, but that of his right-hand person. Frankly, I didn't find it offensive at all. Now, I have found the inability to find wages for Mane and Winaldjum offensive, and the failure to sign Grealish a total joke, but this? Not so much. It is what it is.

The saddest thing is, he has made some terrible mistakes at vital moments because (IMO) the slight specter of ego plus the ruffle of an attractive amour's skirt threw him. Ego = trying to go an extra yard on deals rather than doing them, ruffle = Mourinho's camp. Awful mistakes.

But I think it is very important to acknowledge what he did do for us, has done for us and can do for us. Curiously, the current appts look like he might be leaning finally...we can but hope. COYS.

I think overall that is a good post and fair. Of course Levy has made mistakes ( like we all have) but overall we are only in the position we are going forward because of his time here. I get it s ome fans are unhappy with him and MOST of those who are unhappy have made good points ( there are exceptions of course and we all know who that is) :p.

Lets hope that the season coming up we can get the stadium up and running and all the extra income that will be able to provide, if that happens we will be in a fair better position to buy the players we need and hope that it will bring the fan base back together again.

Don't think anyone can doubt commercially how levy has turned us from mediocre to potentially an elite club with the infrastructure required to be one. Its always been about how he justifies his misgivings in the market and idea of transfer strategy.

We have had to make sacrifices we all get that, but not backing his managers with players wanted and giving them bang average players as a substitution and on the last day of the window has always held us back. We could have and should have won a few more cups during this time and I don't think anyone would be questioning him or for him to have to come out with a PR swing.

If the budget was x amount and x amount with the wages then he should trust someone that he appoints to use the money as wisely as they can rather than getting 5 fodder players that the manager usually doesn't want or has not heard of.

Hopefully he has realised this and hence the appointment of Patrici. Fingers crossed that it all works out as that can only be a great thing for levy, the fans and the club.

The frustrating thing is that if Levy had been humble enough to delegate football matters to footballing people, with the same transfer budget we could have done better and inch ourselves towards a consistent high quality football vitreous circle

Keeping Hitchen, King and Mason....imagine how Paratici and Fonseca must feel - under constant surveillance?

You do make some fair points to be honest and i do not disagree with s ome of them. We have been on a hill climb from the depths of where we sunk in the 90s and its not been easy, we have managed to rise up into becoming a top club again and most of that is down to Levy. We have hit a brick wall over the last 12 months or so for sure but s ome of that has been out of our hands ( covid), i am a supporter of Levy because i remember how low we had sunk before he came here.

I said in my earlier post that he has made mistakes ( like most of us do all the time) but we are where we are now mostly because of him work here. I do agree about what you say about winning cups and have posted my dislike of us not going all in to have done so but it was always met by most posters saying it was not that important for the club to do so.

Lets hope we can get the ground fully open and all the extra shows we were hoping to have ( boxing, NFL, concerts etc) and we push on again. I personally hope that we have a clear out of players who have let three managers down and
we can get back to looking forward to a better future. As for bringing in a DOF i do not totally believe it will be the utopia that s ome will think it will be but lets see what happens.

It will not be a utopia if Levy doesn't back him or is interfering upon football matters, then it comes down to the competency of the DOF.

I think they most frustrating thing is that Levy is highly intelligent and has such high acumen.... but his footballing decisions do not reflect that. Further to this is that Levy is one of the reasons that we expect more these days. Scholar almost sunk this ship, Sugar beached the ship and Levy has built the ship... can he get us out on the open water or is it just that he is a builder without the navigation of getting us out on the Sea ... with the right custard ... we could be winning rather than go the way of the titanic ...

Oh absolutely.

I think I am simply tied to the post of optimism, simply because as a supporter it is one of two choices, and I want to believe.

I don't want us to ever be successful. The champions league final was horrific, I did not know how to react or behave.

When we are the nearly ones I know how to walk and talk. What do we do if we win Stuff?

A young girl at work a pretty thing she always wore long sleeve shirts. Today she wore a short one and had a massive birth mark on her right arm. I did not know what to do, usually I do some of her work because she is pretty. But now????

See I am confused, us winning Stuff? No thank you. I maintain tottenham is not a team it is not a place but tottenham is a state of mind and it ain't successful.

Honestly mate, I disagree that it has been an amazing feat to semi-competently handle the club's own money and plough it into infrastructure instead of the team. It's a binary choice for a chairman - the club generates X, do we spend it on infrastructure, or on players? For 20 years, he chose infrastructure, when he chose spending at all. As a result, we have the stadium, and the training ground.

We charge the highest ticket prices in the league, and have done for about 75% of Levy's tenure here. Our position as a London team affords us that possibility. Other than that, from 2001 to 2021, the Premier League grew enormously, and took us with it - a lot of the revenue we've ploughed into the stadium and training ground is from the broadcast deals the league as a whole has signed.

What has Levy done that's so transformative?

Our progress on the pitch? Redknapp and Poch, entirely. GHod knows, Levy stood in their way and put obstacles at every single point possible - I give him next to no credit for hobbling both of them (indeed, people like @parklane1 praise him for actively hobbling his coaches). The CL income? Down to those two. The increased exposure likewise.

Our growth in commercial income? Honestly, I've posted the graph here previously - our growth has been roughly the same as two of the top six, and well below two. We've only outgrown Arsenal in that time in terms of commercial income. Where's the naming rights deal, and the wider proof that he's a genius in that sphere?

Levy is essentially a glorified CEO for Lewis. If we had hired an actual CEO, would we have done any better or worse these past twenty years, for the, what, 25m-50m we've paid him in that time?

And would we have won more, perhaps, than we ended up winning under this supposed genius?

He is being absolutely honest re: private, and furthermore (what I am about to say is a fact) he is not the best of communicators in the sense of warmth. He is quite shy in that regard and would much rather not engage. It is a personality thing. The video? I am going to guess this was not his idea, but that of his right-hand person. Mate, you believe he's being honest. A couple of pages ago, I posted about the first lie he ever told us, when he took over on that unfortunate day twenty years ago. He claimed to be a lifelong Spurs fan with a box at the Lane. Two years later, he admitted to a pretty reputable journalist that he had no interest in football and chose to get into it because it was the biggest money spinner. It's there in text for everyone to see.

He lied on the first day. He's lied every year since about something or the other, and before this video, was most recently caught lying about the ESL.

I don't know what makes you think he's in any way honest, about anything. Even this video's full of it - one memorable bit is where he swerves the question he 100% wrote himself about spending money to answer that the club reinvests all income...firstly, that's wrong, because we made a payment of 20m to ENIC a couple of years ago, iirc, and secondly, the questions the fans want to know is - will you spend ENIC's money on the club? Not if you'll barely competently reinvest the club's own money - you've done that for twenty years.

He doesn't care, mate. Not about us, not about Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. He cares about ENIC's portfolio, and he's a glorified salesman fresh out of his discount Mr.Byrite clothing store. Him and Lewis, both.

You can believe he's changed - to me, everything suggests he hasn't. Chief among them hiring Fonseca, the cheap option, the discount option, the bargain bin option. I wish him well, but it's clear why he's here - he's cheap.

Nothing will change in terms of how we're run, because Levy never intended for anything to change, pre or post stadium. Fonesca will struggle against the current, one hand tied behind his back. Levy will penny-pinch, spend 999,999 weeks knocking 5p off a deal. He'll lie to fans, the media, everyone about what he actually wants.

What *is* changing is everything around the club. For the first time, no one's buying it - not even the media, which usually falls for Levy's schtick. Journalists are asking questions about where we've actually gone under Levy's 'model', fans are turning on him, and the increased exposure he himself has wanted so dearly has now backfired in putting him under a microscope.

I have hope that it's the things around the club that drive change at the top. And once ENIC are gone, we can dream again - about anything, about everything, about becoming a footballing institution again instead of a perpetually trophyless, penny-pinching line on an ENIC balance sheet.

@DubaiSpur

I appreciate your reply.
I will continue to believe there might be light at the end of the tunnel, otherwise I will have to stop supporting the club, and sadly, for a variety of irrational reasons, that is beyond me.
My greatest fear and anger was realized in November 2019. In one 48 hour spell I might add. Nothing is -or will be for me- worse than that.
So I can only say 'onwards'...
