AVB & Spurs Tactics and Formations discussion thread

Surely a manager at a new club will play in a way that suits the players he has inherited plus those he buys?
Sure there will be basics that he fundamentally likes but i dont see that we should look at Chelsea and find identikit players to fit into that way of playing

People are not arguing that he will play like he did at Chelsea because that's the way Chelsea play. It's more that he changed the style of play at Chelsea quite radically, away from what their players were used to and were comfortable with to a style much more similar to the one he used at Porto, indicating that he might do a similar thing here as he sees that style as better than other styles. Hopefully with better results.

Derail:

Do you have formal qualifications on all topics you discuss in any detail? Do you ever discuss politics, finance, religion, music, art, fashion or whatever in any kind of detail? I take it you talk out of your own self important arse in that case unless you stay clear of all topics you have formal qualifications in.

Anyway, this should probably be in a new "should we have an own tactics" thread and the "are tactics discussions only for self important smart arses" thread.

As you ask: that'll be a no.

I agree with having a thread like this, where all 'tactics talk' can just be dumped. There's a few on here who obviously think their scientific hyper-analysis of football is incredibly interesting to read. It isn't. It's mind-numbingly dull and boring, just as I'd turn off from anyone discussing the history of trains or which pile makes for perfect carpet.

I mean, do any of you armchair experts actually have any formal coaching qualifications anyway? Just wondering, as - if you don't - then it's quite a reasonable assumption to suggest that you may actually all be talking out of your self-important arses.

Hmm...I think you are going to be disappointed. If there is one thing that's going to get a lot more airplay around here is tactics and formations considering who our new manager is.

Regards tactics, Im most interested in our right side of midfield/attack.

If as expected AVB runs with a 433 I am content that the midfield will be fine. Currently Modric, VDV, Huddlestone, Parker, Sandro and Livermore offer enough quality combinations I think thats ok. Defence looks set (on the assumption Vertonghen comes in) and suited to AVBs high line.

The front line will be Bale (presumably on the left) and a front man (possibly Ade) and ?

Does Lennon have enough about him to thrive in that position? Or is the unlikely talk of the likes of Walcott more the sort of player we will look to?

Clearly Walker is more than capable of keeping width on the overlap, and if I understand AVBs system well enough the right forward will be free to come inside to support the striker and threaten goal...

Agreed. Right side is going to be interesting.

We will need a new keeper, and I'm sure AVB knows a fair few around that can play the way he needs. (It was tough to move on Cech who had been successful with Chelsea, here bringing in someone in goal is natural anyway, so should be smooth.

Defence - pretty much sorted. Walker, Naughton, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Caulker, Assou-Ekotto. Maybe we need a young centre back that would be happy being 4th choice - the kid from Forest maybe. And also a back up left back if we don't keep Rose, but I reckon Rose will suit AVB's system. But not too much surgery is needed there at all.

Midfield could take a bit of work. He likes a player to hold. He seems to have given up the idea of all 3 of them rotating when in England, so Parker could still do a job. This holder also drops into centre back to make a 3-4-3 on occasion, so maybe the holders should be Sandro and Huddlestone, and we move Parker on.

In the playmaking role, we have Modric, or a Modric replacement. Maybe Huddlestone + Modric/Modric replacement, with Parker/Sandro holding. For the goalscoring role, Sigurdsson would obviously be perfect. And as a squad option, we could do worse than keep Jenas. Pacey. Can break forward. Tidy in possession. Maybe under AVB he could do well in that system.

Upfront, we obviously need a striker or two capable of leading the line. We could then go a number of different ways. Bale could either hold the width on the left, or I personally think he could be amazing as an inside forward from the right. But we probably would need a couple of options to play in the 4-3-3 up top.

So we have a good base, and additions can be added without too much trouble or causing unrest. A keeper, a 4th choice centre back, and 3 or 4 players capable of playing at the top of the 4-3-3. That's assuming Vertonghen, Sigurdsson and Modric stay/a replacement signed. That's not too much, and with AVB's scouting knowledge, I'm sure we can do it.

Is that actually a picture of a kid who blew himself up with a fart?

gonad*s.

And given that you're not a professional football scout, I assume you never give your opinion on how good a particular player is?

Oh right. So 'braineclipse' asks me a question, and I answer it.

But that's not good enough for 'elltrev' though; no - he knows my mind better than I do myself

Why are you even bothering to ask me a question, if you obviously know all the answers yourself?

Can we have all the discussion of whether there should be a tactical thread in the 'Should there be a tactical thread' thread please? :barnet:

I remember having a long discussion with you about the Israel - Palestine war in 'randomination'; if that's not political, I don't know what is!

5 positions look like being up for grabs imo, or 6 if Vertonghen doesn't get done.

Whatever makes you happy. I find discussions a pretty decent way of learning new things, that includes topics I'm not an expert in. Seems to be quite a few similar minded people on this forum. I don't quite understand why you need to point out that something others find interesting is boring to you and accompany that with slight insults when you could so easily just scroll past it.

A long discussion? Maybe/probably on your side, but - I can assure you - my view on the Middle East is short and incredibly succinct; a cursory interest at best. In truth, I couldn't give a flying fudge what happens there.
