Have to wonder if fitness it now the issues
As in we’re differing due to volume of games and other teams are now match fit so can deal with attacking more and more which negates things

Defending a 1-0 lead for 80mins is ridiculous. Not making one mistake for 80 mins is unlikely.
Even if there are no mistakes, there still can be a bad decision from a ref or the opposition can score a screamer that can't be stopped.
I can understand taking that approach at 2-0 but not at 1-0, it's too dangerous.

If you sit back on a 1-0 lead, there is always a chance a player switches off or makes a mistake. Especially if they’re tired having been attacked for pretty much 90 mins. Players aren’t robots so you can’t rely on them to be perfect.

We looked good for 20 mins and then fell back. That’s ridiculous stuff, you can’t win games like that and I’m not sure Jose ever did. We have some great attacking options and we did not threaten their goal once. That’s no way to play football.

Im starting to doubt Jose hugely. He either can’t motivate the players or has brick tactics.

that's exactly what we are trying to do, automaton perfection, like Jose did at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Madrid, players making the right decision in every single moment of every single game

he's been here over a year now, I expected us to be a little further along

It's hard work to defend relentlessly for 90 minutes tbf
That's very true, but are any of us sure that was Jose's instructions or that the players couldn't carry out his instructions?

I find it hard to believe that Jose said, after 57 seconds "ok, park the bus for 95 mins"

So why are the players doing it then?

This is what I don't get - how much of a goddamn fool is this guy? We have great attackers, and absolutely bang-average defenders. Why sit back on a 1-0 lead and giving every opponent about 50 chances to put the ball into the box, with the likes of Dier and Davies hanging around - and with Lloris rooted to his line like he's goddamn handcuffed to the post?

Something's wrong, either with him, or with his inability to tell the players what to do. Either way, it stinks of cowardice.

Put another Hojberg level player in the middle and there would be a difference.

might be able to play the ball out and step up.

this isn’t a new thing under Jose either.

It's a tough one, because the other alternative is "the best form of defence is attack" which runs with even more risk.

I don't necessarily believe in being that naive either but there is surely a better balance to be struck. Tonight was puke football and a lot of what I've seen since the City game has been puke football. If another big club was playing it, I'd be laughing at them.

Jose still has us in touch with the top 4 so that keeps him in a job. But if we continue like this, we'll drift further away and he'll be under severe pressure. And he stands to lose a lot reputation-wise if he gets fired from two jobs in a row as a failure.

I can believe it. Its our usual tactics - defence position themselves just outside the box and our forwards retreat back into our half. Its awful to watch

I think he expects more from Kane and Son, keep it super tight with the other 9, they make goals on the break.

Problem is that any idiot can figure out how to defend against two players, even if they both are superhuman Messis.

It worked in that it was fun to watch Spurs. It isn’t, these days. What’s the point of watching matches that are boring, stressful and infuriating? Stupid hobby.

I agree, the point of the hobby is to be so fudging good at it that the very chance of us not winning is impossible, they shouldn't be stressful or infuriating they should be boring though, by right of being so easy.

His teams at those clubs were never this clueless and devoid of ideas. If we were focused on being perfect, we wouldn't be losing the ball so regularly.

We've seen it so often now that it's hard to believe it's not the tactics - where are the early subs to correct this if the players aren't working to his tactics?

and if it's not how he wants us to play i think that might be even more worrying regarding his abilities as a manager and conveying his ideas.

The point stands. They are comfortable CL level players. Nowhere near Europa league. To blame the squad quality after that tactical abortion we just witnessed is a total cop out.

I agree.

I'm still angry that we had the easiest CL run in history, didn't play a single side even half as good as us, and still didn't win it.
