Jose Mourinho - SACKED

I must have imagined Poch dropping Kaboul, Capoue, Walker, Bentaleb, Adebayor. Plus leavIng Janssen Nkoudou Sissoko, Rose, Moura (European cup final), Vorm ( 2015 Carling cup final) on the bench. Perhaps it was more likely that he wanted to play his best 11 whenever he could.
Mostly early in his stay with us. Much less later on.

Best 11 for sure, but you also have to keep an eye both on the development of players and how the mentality and overall attitudes are developing in the squad.

Mourinho has never stayed at a club as long as Pochettino stayed with us so definitely a lot of reasons to think Mourinho could end up suffering his own issues as time progresses. And if we get back to steady improvement signing players that strengthen the starting 11 will again become more difficult.

Jose's career is strange

- Porto and Inter were clubs he left at the top
- United and Madrid are circuses
- I think he stayed as long as anyone at Chelsea

I think Jose has never had a role like Spurs, we are well run, expectations are realistic, he has already done pretty much the top clubs, family is settled in London (he never moved to Manchester). I'm not saying he will stay but I wouldn't be totally shocked if he spent a while.

Realistic expectations and an overall strategy, including a transfer strategy, that matches those expectations. At United there seemed to be an expectation of quick success, at first Mourinho was backed in the transfer market. Then he no longer was, without an apparent change in expectations.

Chelsea and Real were chaotic. But there was a match between expectations and approach at least.

At Chelsea second time round he didn’t make a Huge amount of transfers. He just plugged the gaps he saw and won the league
At inter he did similar but also created a real fudge you attitude for the team
Inter is IMO the nearest to us. The team needed tweaks to step up in Europe . He did it and cleaned up

At united he inherited so much brick. The team was full of defenders with little or no creativity and he still needed to add more defenders. It was really and rarely if ever recognised when people focus his time there. Van Gaal left them a woefully bad squad but even that one won a trophy

Two experienced pros working together, with a plan.
This is not to be under estimated, Goons and United had Fergie and Gill, Wenger had Dein and arguably the clubs have not had a decent partnership since the executives left. I know when it comes to transfers there always seems to be a grey area around who is responsible the final decision, especially if you are defending or criticising the their regime. It feels like Mourinho has for what HE wanted more than some previous managers, I’ve speculated that perhaps Levy is a little more submissive in their relationship given he is one of the few that have arrived here and it not being the biggest job of their careers, but the most pleasing for me is that the the wage bill has been increased to allow greater quality in depth which puts us much closer to an even footing with the top clubs in the league. This was one of the things that kept me going through the Wembley games and nil net spend and the season of no transfer investment, that it would lead us to a more competitive place financially. And this has been down at a time when the stadium benefits are not being realised.

I agree. I think that started well before van Gaal too. I know Ferguson won the league there in his last season and that was an immense achievement. But that was a squad where key players were getting older and the younger players generally weren't of the required quality.

Combination of the lack of money because of the takeover and rather average recruitment over some time. They've been more or less a mess since Ferguson left, but they were a bit of a mess for a while before that too.

He didn't actually spend that much at Real either. By their standards at least.

this just feels like a decent fit. I dunno maybe i'm giddy off of the week we just had (Spurs won a fudging penalty shootout ffs. AND SCORED ALL 5).

As someone who had a massive Poch boner, i still backed Jose although several times i questioned if he could still do it. This week just gone, i dunno, feels like he has really started to show what he can do for us.

And let's not forget, the number of games we had to play, no one had that many did they? Easily could have gone out of a comp, but by luck or skill, we had a stunning week. Let's hope he can really deliver.

There's also one on chances conceded floating around somewhere. I'm harsh on our existing motley lot of CBs, but to be fair, we're near the bottom on that one - have only conceded three non-penalty big chances this season, in the bottom four/five.
That I’d like to see
It was the biggest issue for us when we couldn’t defend

You asked?

That is good to see
I believe last year we were guilty of increasing the amount of big chances we conceded
I’ll add what I’ve said quite a few times. If you take away the two hand ball penalties and break down the down goals we have conceded

Everton - ignoring the fact it wasn’t a free kick IMO, it was a brilliant cross and header. Toby didn’t jump to make it hard for DCL but he would still have been beaten in the air by a lad who has mastered the led Ferdinand technique of when and how to jump (Ronaldinho stole it off Les)

Southampton - Ings goal was not dissimilar to last season. A defender gets too long on the ball to play a great pass forward (Ndombele and PEH just watched KWP)

Dier gets done with that ball abs is very very shaky and Ings takes it really well
United - davvo letting his man get behind hims and a very clumsy challenge but one that IMO most CBS would make

The penalties should never ever be penalties. There is no sporting work where a player gets penalised for having body parts

so we have 3 goals where there were some individual errors but they were what I’d call normal errors. Not ones from stupid passes or us giving the opposition the ball back. Southampton’s is the worse worst ok in my opinion as midfield didn’t do their job enough and Dier showed a repeated weakness to his game

when I look at other teams goals conceded on MOTD and see how their in some cases setting up the oppositions goals (Maguire for example) were greatly improved

Creating loads of big chances while conceding very few seems like a good way to win a lot of fotball matches.

Still need to see that more consistently against bus parking teams, and deal with (good) high pressing more consistently. But hopefully we've turned the corner on this.
