As much as Lamela was certainly a problem he is not the only problem. You still need to get the ball to quickly to whoever is playing ACM and neither of Winks or Sissoko are willing and capable of doing so.

Lo Celso looks good when he plays because he's strong and more importantly can beat a man to make himself some space to play the pass. But still he's never going to be enough by himself, more ball players are needed in the side and we need to break up the Sissoko/Winks gruesome twosome once again (I thought Jose had already learnt this).
Yet people think we need more DMs too so what is right?!?!?
The CM yesterday IMO was fine and they actually did use the ball well enough. Sissoko was barely passing First half but was solid in that aspect second half
But if your passing to a no 10 who takes literally 5 touches when 2 would do you can’t spring a quick attack... it stops dead there and then

Will certainly be fun to see who the midfield three are at home to wham.

I would like to see ndombele and lo celso as a pairing and dele ahead of them in the no 10 role.

Why the actual fudge are people voting for Lloris as MoM? He made one good save! Other than that he saved 3 shots I'd expect any keeper to handle.

I think that we showed United too much respect. They are about the same level as us, I wouldn't have a problem sitting back against a good team. Son and Bergwijn are wasted spending most of the game protecting our fullbacks.
Have you seen where Aurier was when we were attacking
He was forward and wide
We needed someone to cover for him, although I’ll add he didn’t get caught out

I was talking about when we were in defence, where we sat deep in a 4-4-2, which was most of the last hour of the game.

Yes, when defending Mou had Son left wing and Bergwijn right wing, so a 442 with Lamela and Kane furthest forward... and Lamela and Kane are not good on the break.

For me we should have had at least one midfielder that can pass into the strikers, and Son/Bergwijn using their pace up top.
Even if Kane came on fresh after half time, or was the #10 passing it into those guys.

We played a united team fully fit with every player available. We were yet again missing some key players.
we IMO looked solid defensively and very capable in the counter which is a valid tactic
The issue is when you don’t have the players you need on the bench and they do it can change the game, like it did.
And if our key creative role has lamela there who is way down the pecking order for that role, vs their first choice we would what’s struggle by comparison.
I thought the team looked really well organised for once (something we haven’t seen for 18 months), and if we had the right fresh legs on after 60 mins we would have got the win. i
I’ll also add that I would have taken Kane off for NDombele around 65 mins and move son up top, against their slowish centre backs
Did we look capable on the counter attack? I didn't see that. When Man Utd upped the pace in the second half all we could do was turn the ball over to them within 1 pass of getting it.

I agree re: Kane. It was clear from just after half time that he was running on fumes (and even before then when he wasn't the Man Utd centre halves completely dominated him).

Hopefully the next match will see only one of Winks or Sissoko, Dele or Ndombele as the number 10 and Lo Celso as the second midfielder alongside Sissoko or Winks (I'd probably have Sissoko and leave Winks on the bench).

There were quite a lot of times they were ahead of him only fit him to not release it
Hence why players then come deeper and deeper
Twice fernandes played a quick one touch pass and both times united had chances
Lamela doesn’t do quick passing I’m afraid and it kills counter attacks
Lamela has to drag his foot over the ball three times before he does anything else.... I think it must be a superstition or something. Mourinho should coach him to change his superstition from that to hopping onto the pitch on his left leg at the start of the game or something similar.

Thank feck VAR prevented Moss from earning his win bonus!

How many pens has he given against us? He must hold the record. Remember him giving Emirates Marketing Project three against us at the Ethihad in 2014, including one when Phat Phrank went down like Sgt Elias in Platoon.

I dunno how anyone can dislike Sissoko.... I mean what’s a guy got to do? He plays with such heart and intelligence.

He was standing off players most the game and didn’t engage - he had 10 touches in the first half.

He did a

We had chances but we fluffed it. Lamela had a number of chances but fluffed the pass or took an extra touch.

Our midfield isn’t creative - which is why it needs an overhaul.

We need 1, good, proper DM. Who is sound in his positioning, disciplined, strong, and good enough on the ball to be able to play through the opposition's press (every single team we play presses us now as we are so poor at playing through a press).

With Ndombele's work rate that might be suicidal. If we played that midfield and I was West Ham manager I'd ask Bowen and their Brazilian player (can't remember his name) to just drift into that space in the middle and then they'd be running directly at our centre halves.

I think last night showed one of the difficulties that Mourinho will have working with this team. If we'd won 1-0, you'd have said "okay it's not pretty but that was a Mourinho masterclass. Got a goal, soaked up pressure and allowed them few chances."

The problem is, Aurier was good but had a couple of pretty big brainfarts particularly the one that led to the non-pen (I don't think it was a foul). Sanchez was excellent but had a massive brainfart in the first half when he gifted Rashford a very good chance. Dier had a brainfart on the penalty and Winks was defensively careless and naive. Hugo and Davies were really, really good. Close to flawless defensively but we all know Hugo has mistakes in him.

Even when our defence is good, like last night, there are just too many big mistakes in them.
