Annus Horribilis 2011/2012 .............................

No point, the rules are clear, if we appealed we would look pathetic, if it happens it happens, we take our medicine and move on

Levy should rather investigate how we fudged up a 13 point lead on 4th rather than the main story

I agree with everything you said marky, but realistically this situation will only ever happen in the Premiership, the league and teams are so strong that there should be special dispensation for our league. 6th best team in England in the CL final ?

Let's say the unthinkable happens and they win it, the rules should still be amended imo.

I don't agree with the winners getting automatic qualification and said as much when the Liverpool issue was going on. Surprise surprise it was Victims FC who were hard done by and the rules had to get changed to prevent an uprising.

I understand why under the old Euro Cup model the winners got to "defend their title", because it really was the "Champions" league, and the Euro Cup holders were the ultimate champions.

But under this "Champions" league, champions have nothing to do with it when the 3rd placed English team earns the same qualification rights as the league winners.

The World Cup winners don't get auto qualification any more. Europa League winners who also qualify for Champs League don't get to defend their Europa title. The NY Giants don't go straight to the NFL playoffs.

i woke up this morning and the first thought was i cannot believe we finished below the worst Arse team ive seen in over 16 years

ok, had we finished 4th behind City, Utd and Chelsea then fair enough, they have better players and more winnners.....but 4th and behind Arse??? Walcott, Rosicky, Gervinho, Gibbs, Benayoun, Jenkinson, Ramsey, Coquelin, Mertesacker, Chamakh, Squilaci #-o

take away RVP, Vermaelen, Chesney, Song, maybe Arteta and the Ox, and that is a poor squad. Wenger really earned his money this season getting something outta that motley crew

that lot finished 3rd???:~

Arsenal deserved 3rd and we deserved 4th. Arsenal are not the dross you make them out to be and if you took the 6 best players away from any team it would make the squad much poorer.

I know a lot of people on here are disappointed but things will look better when Bayern win. Yes 3rd is better but 4th is pretty good too, no?

I agree with the thread titke, sadly.

But at the beginning of the season I'd have sanpped your hands off if you'd told me we'd finish 4th.

However, blowing 3rd place and all the advantages it would have given us (better ability to attract transfer targets EARLIER, better planning for the income of CL, NLD gloating rights etc etc) means it has a bitter taste to what should be an achievement for Harry.
Sadly, he'll get the 'bottling it' label that our club has had in the last 50 years or so...

Have you ever stopped to consider that at third place in the league we were punching above our weight? I'm as disappointed as anyone that we didn't consolidate our position and finish third. However, at the start of the season I fully expected the top four to be Utd, City, Scum and Blue scum. Then I thought Liverpool would finish above us with all the money they spent (despite spending it badly) and that at best we would be fighting it out for fifth with the likes of Liverpool and Everton. So to finish fourth is a fantastic achievement, especially finishing above Chelsea with all their resources.

Yes, it feels like we've underperformed because of how it all panned out, but hand on heart prior to the season starting was anybody seriously expecting us to be in a title challenge at Christmas time? Was anybody really expecting us to finish third? I very much doubt it. We can not realistically expect to be in the mix every season as all the other clubs in and around us pay massive wages. They have also had much more european exposure over the last decade so no matter what we might think, are a more attractive proposition to foreign players.

Hopefully, if we can sign well this summer we may finish in the top four next season too, and then we can slowly build. Without a cash injection like the one City have had, we can not realistically expect to be challenging for the league until we have established ourselves as a top 3/4 side, and finish there several seasons in a row. Only then will the top players really see us as a team within which they can fulfil their ambitions. Until then, we have to accept that the top top players will go elsewhere and we will have to consistently over achieve in order to have any limited success.

Yes United bottled it as well. But united can console themselves with not worrying about a CL final or have to negotiate a qualifier.

We on the other hand...

no they cant. they vent their frustration at a much higher plane than us BUT if you could standardise it somehow they are just as rash as we are

you know there are fans calling for ferguson to go because they didnt win the title?

you'd think that was crazy...then you look at us

Good post

If Liverpool had won half the games they drew at home (not unreasonable) they might have pushed top 4

If my aunt had a ballbag she'd be my uncle

Still waiting for that list of players that outguns everything Arsenal, Chelsea, Saudi Sportswashing Machine, Liverpool, Everton, United and City has to offer

I may be waiting some time......

bottom line is - paper means nothing, its what the players and staff of the club do on a match day that matters.

that why we are 4th

the board seems to be going into over analysis meltdown at the mo

That lot finished ONE PLACE HIGHER and TWO POINT BETTER than that lot did last year. So results would dictate that last year for them was worse. Let's not buy into that "worst side they've had for 16 years" gonad*s.

We have the 3rd best team in the league though, so we've underachieved in that sense.

Arguably third best team. We have not got the third best squad though, and are seriously short of back up in key areas. The scum finished above us because RVP had the season of a lifetime, one that he'll probably never better. Unfortuantely we didn't have anyone hitting such heights, otherwise we'd have left them in our dust.

A little different really. Liverpool had WON the Champions League, they had every right to go and enter the next year to defend their championship

No they didn't. The rules at the time were that to qualify for the champions league a team had to finish in the top four. Liverpool did not, but then they bitched and whined the way that only Liverpool can, and the FA lobbied EUFA into allowing a fifth team on a one off basis. After that debacle (where the FA were fudging weak and embarrassing) they changed the rules so that if a team wins the champions league and finishes outside the top four then they would take the fourth sport at the expense of the team finishing fourth in the league.

We all knew the rules at the start of the season, and I personally blame Liverpool for acting like such spoilt ****s at the time. The FA should have been stronger and said that Liverpool had not met the qualification criteria. This season, it is different so we don't have a leg to stand on.

Just a final thought, for what it's worth. In my view, the Champions League should be for the champions only. If a team wins the champions league they should have the right to defend their title. I think it's brick that nowadays finishing fourth is seen as better than winning a competition as prestigious as the FA Cup. Fourth place should not get you into the CHAMPIONS league, but UEFA are greedy and want as many of the biggest clubs in Europe to play in it. It's gonad*s.

We certainly aren't clear of Arsenal in my opinion. Wenger and RvP were the difference, but let's not forget that Arsenal were missing two of their best three central midfielders for most of the season. I think Scotty Parker has been fantastic this season, and our player of the year but Alex Song had a better season for Arsenal for example. I hate Arsenal with a passion, but we have to be realistic about their abilities. And ours. They have finished top four for what? Fourteen, fifteen consecutive seasons and yet every year some of our fans are deluded enough to write them off.

Hello Steff,

I always look out for your posts: your quite positive but also realist.
Where do you see things going from here for Harry and the squad?

That's comedy gold

Now if you said pretends to have links into Levy, constantly trying to put down the Manager in sly ways and make out that Levy is completely blameless whilst mean old Redknapp is ruining anything on the other hand....

Its very easy to blame the others, but its also very easy to blame just ourselves.

Some of the refereeing we`ve had this season was beyong belief. I had never seen anything like that game at Stoke before.

And i dont think the Fa helped a lot either to be fair.

I know Harry made some tactical mistakes in the run-in, but did any keeper gift us 3 points like Fulop yesterday? I dont think so.

We can blame ourselves, and say that we make our own luck, but it doesnt work like that apparently.

Agree.

Liverpool - Spent ?ú100mill
Arsenal - Check there wages out.
Chelsea - LOL

We did great but on this forum and Spurs fans in general do over-rate some of our players and that's because sometimes we watch them and they are brilliant but other times; They don't play very good and inconsistency with the players is a major problem.

If Bayern beat Chelsea then this season would have been a success and people go on about our 13 point lead but We did have the easier fixtures while Arsenal had a harder fixture list and then we had Everton Away, United Home, Arsenal Away and Chelsea Away and these are matches that we normally lose so it all balanced out.

Next Season: Versatile wingers (Hoillet) 3 Strikers (Ade+Damiao+Steven Fletcher) and CB (Vertoghen+Caulker Recall) and possibly GK in Krul?
