I like the Shining but could never work out why people find it scary / horror - its one I watched pre-teens and never found it scary, it was only way later that I found out people thought it was.

It's a psychological horror and watching it at an early age would have meant most of it went over your head i guess

I have seen it again a few times since - I think its a good film just never saw it as a horror and surprised people found it scary- chilling yes but scary never for me.

It really needs to be watched in a pure cinema environment, dark, comfortable (to give the sense of security). Full immersion.
The sound, colour and unconventional direction, including uneasy camera angles and drawn out scenes are supposed to keep you feeling a bit nauseous throughout.
Like when you walk down a dark alley on a cold night somewhere that you would rather not be.

I cannot believe I missed this post. You should all be relieved however...I could write about the genius of both The Shining and Kubrick for a long time. Anyone who has trouble sleeping, LMK and next time a thread offers me the chance to waffle on, I will and then get your trouble or partner to read it to you for a great kip...
