Anthony Martial

Got it in one.

In what industry do you only get one week paternity leave? Especially when you factor in long haul flights. Ridiculous management by Jose. He's cracking already and the season hasn't started yet.

In fairness to him (and I hate myself for saying so) in football players seem to come back pretty quick.

Delph went home and back between games in Russia didnt he?

I can accept, from his POV, something isnt on with Martial disappearing for a week. Of course, we all know, its likely a case of a transfer in the offing (or hoping to be) as well as the birth of his child. He/the club/his agent/whoever will be looking at it as a chance to try and stay local if a bid comes in.

14 years ago, not sure if that really sets a precedent considering the pattern that has emerged since.

The 3(ish) year cycle of boom and bust seems to hold true with him.

The interesting part, this time, is that he hasnt had the "boom" yet. Will he go bust without winning anything major first?

(For him and Utd, Im not sure the Community Shield or EUROPA league count!)

I think 3rd season syndrome is less about an actual prescribed event occurring at a fixed time!

It’s more about how long the employing club can stomach his increasing antics and deteriorating attitude!

At Porto he was younger and possibly nowhere near as cantankerous as he is now.

With each new club and as he’s got older, he’s turned into your archetypical grumpy old man. This seems to be tracking a success rate which has gone from ‘beyond clubs expectations’ to ‘possibly achieving their minimum expectations - maybe on a technicality’.

His stated preference of always wanting to buy big money established 28-32 year olds will also lead him to clash with the boards for obvious reasons.

I think what we’re seeing on this tour is his generally miserable demeanour reaching a crescendo!

I mean for gods sake man - you are manager of one of the two biggest clubs in the world, on a highly paid for free jolly to the US, and you get to play a few games of the game you should love, and try out a few kids in a tournament where you have a free pass and no pressure. Just bloody enjoy yourself!!

Its a fair point about Porto - he was on the up. It was from Chelsea onward he declared himself The Special One and his ego went crazy.

As to the 3 year thing, I think its simply that he burns out.

He sets a seige mentality, "everyone is against us", approach, there is only so long that can galvanise a squad before it loses its effectiveness.
He always wants more. Utd spent horrific sums in Sanchez and Pogba alone, and he comes right back demanding more be spent on players (never cheap).
He airs his laundry in public. While things are going well he is generally well humoured and no bother. As soon as he stops getting his way he starts slating players and board alike, VERY publically, while looking like someone just shat in his tea.
I imagine its about this point the players just stop putting in the yards, and the board start wondering where they will be in 2-3 years with his transfer/squad building strategy.
And then not long after he goes.

If he goes before the end of this season, this will be the first job he has truly failed IMO. I could argue about many failings in other jobs, but he has always had success to counter that. This time? As I said - charity shield and EUROPA simply dont cut it.

I really can't understand the way Mourinho publicly calls out his players so often yet many of them don't seem to mind. I read how determined Shaw is to stay now even though he's barely played and got ridiculed by his boss multiple times.
I think it is perhaps a case of knowing that he only has a year left on his contract and he is probably better off sitting it out and going on a free in a year’s time.

Of course there is also the consideration that a move from Man Utd to all other than 2 or 3 clubs is a move down.

Maybe he's waiting but he's already wasted a key part of his career where a lot of development takes place. They might be a step down but he'll at least play and still be taking home millions.

I think when Mourinho is in charge its only ever a temporary thing. After two years the clock is ticking on his time there.

I think all players believe in themselves, maybe its a case of "Ill show you!". Which Martial did (9 goals in 12 was it?) and got dropped anyway.

I think players agents etc are smart, and know when there is a year on your deal sitting tight makes a lot of £££ sense.

There are many reasons why. Football is odd, isnt it? Had my boss treated me that way I would be long gone, but football has different practices.

I think Martial needs to get out of Utd for his career to progress, he is still only 22 and he is stagnating at Utd. Remember it was only a couple of years back when he was voted the best U21 player in Europe and since then he has been a bit part player at Utd and also lost his place in the French squad. If he was to come here i am sure he would flourish under Poch and become a top player.

Could see us playing 3 up top with Martial here, meaning he would be guaranteed lots of game time

If both Martial and Zaha play wide off the let (primarily anyway), then we obviously aren't going to sign both. Certainly not at those prices. So i think it's a case of motoring BOTH situations very carefully with a view to striking when the opportunity is most beneficial for the right one. Poch will have his preference no doubt. Levy will be looking at fees, which seem to me to be in a similar bracket.

The traction is mounting for both players to move, it's just frustrating that it seems quiet on the signature front. I just can't tell which player we'll lean towards. Though i'm def not ruling out the chances of us leaving it too late to sign either of them and ending up with a plan E or F!!! sexy.

At least with a Martial-Alder swap we both end up par. The galling thing about Zaha is that nearly £20m of that money would go to United as their sell-on as well

I'd be happy with either, preferably Martial as long as Toby is not a makeweight in the deal
