VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Ridiculous. What would be the point? The replay (which barely takes time if you dont have to run over to a screen) gives confirmation. That is the whole reason for VAR in the first place.

Because the game is fast and free flowing. Any sort of flashback sequences/interruption irreparably damages the spectacle.

It's why the goalline watches were a brilliant invention, but why VAR is the end of civilisation

The pace of the game is exactly why we need VAR. It's impossible for one single human to keep up with everything that happens and that's why cheating is so common.

Cheating has increased because we have decided contact equals a foul imo.

That's the point I am making and the Iranian player made having VAR decide for some but not all skews decisions and leaves you open to accusations of corruption

It seems a funny argument that you want the ref to have control over the game but not on this

There's just as much cheating from defenders, especially using their arms on set pieces, and some of them have been caught this WC. Some of them are experts at making sure the ref doesn't see it.
Is pace of the game an issue for set pieces, grabbing at corners has always been there Italians were always great at it.

By reviewed don't they mean the ref didn't jog across to have another look, rather than VAR not having a look at it at all?

I took it to mean that he made the decision independently. I could be wrong. He certainly pointed straight to the spot.

Yes he definitely called it straight away, but presumably then VAR would look and say "Err, might want to look again there..." if they thought it was a brick decision?

It can be for both. The point is that the ref isn't able to see everything and it doesn't slow down the game any more than a dozen other things. The next logical step would be to stop the clock when the ball is out of play.

I like football, I think introducing this makes the game worse.

That withstanding having VAR decide for some but not all skews decisions and leaves you open to accusations of corruption.

Using it for all decisions would be impractical. I can't see how it is being used at this WC is any more open to corruption than not having video refs.

You sounds like a "proper football man". I look forward to your calls for Poch to be replaced by Big Sam this season.

Poch:

I did have a plan. I prepared myself mentally: ‘What’s the best way to mark Ronaldo? If they pass to him and I give him space to run into, he’ll kill me. So, what should I do? Not give him space. If he turns, either I foul him or he’ll do me’. It makes me laugh the way they pinpoint how Alderwiereld is one of the best because he doesn’t commit fouls. A centre-back that doesn’t commit fouls! In my time, if you didn’t commit fouls, it was because you couldn’t play at centre-back. Twenty years ago if you didn’t go in hard and mark your territory, strikers would eat you alive. And when you got a yellow card, at least it was after giving someone a good kick.

I don't think the ones against Kane were penalties either. I do that every corner, every weekend

What?
Just because you do it week in, week out, they aren't pens? Rubbish! Both were pens and by the sounds of it you should be enjoying at the very least a penalty concession per match if not an early bath if that is how you go about your work.
