FA Cup Semi Final OMT ***Tottenham Hotspur FC v Manchester United***

Its probably why Pochettino plays down the FA cup because too many blow it out of proportion when we lose.
We lost 2-1in a sims to Man U........it’s football.

For a guy who apparently cares not for the domestic cup competitions, we've now been in back to back semi finals of one of them. Admittedly lost both, but is that worse than fudging it up in the 4th round?
Doesn't really matter if you go out in the 1st round or semi. You still end up winning fudge all.

To be fair I don’t sctailly
Give a brick anymore. I’m disappointed I’m a bell and have promised to spend £900 on a game where I’m 35 and watching 19 year old
Boys in tight shirts kick balls. Why the givnement haven’t arrested me for this I don’t know. If anyone does want my ST then let me know as I think imm gonna let my £50 depose
Go
If we call the British consulate in Portugal, do you think they'll find GGG for us, and give him a custard tart and a cuddle?

Just back in. Driving back from dropping my nephew home, the headline of the sports item on the radio news bulletin wasn’t “Man Utd win FA Cup semi-final”. It was “Tottenham lose their 8th FA Cup semi final in a row”.
We deliver it gift wrapped for the media.

Every time, its what we do. We can win big games in a league season but one off, bigger games we just don't have the stomach for. I think the problem now is that generally speaking the fans just don't believe the team can see it over the line now and once you are in that position where the fans lose faith then it is a slippery slope.

Hmmm...my instant reaction is that I kind of completely agree with the ‘but what have they won’ crew now. Not because we absolutely deserve it, but because goddam, it sucks that we had this opportunity and didn’t really turn up. And to be honest, I didn’t have confidence that we would win this game. There is good reason for that - we just aren’t there yet as a side.

On the other hand, I wonder if our poor form over these last couple of weeks is because we really amped up the performances around that period of United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Juve. We have usually finished the seasons strongly but we seem to be stuttering to the end of this one. Maybe the exertions to get extra performance in the CL and in that really tough league run took it out of us and we don’t have much else left to give. Next season, new stadium, more for wages and a bigger squad and maybe we progress one further step along.

At the end of the day, a 2-1 loss to the team that will finish second is not the end of the world. It sucks, but it could have happened. It did, but that’s all it is.

I do believe. That’s why I am so gutted. I had belief in abundance in the first half. And the start of the second half.
Then the belief became just hope. Then hope became resignation. But it won’t stop me believing we can do it next season.
Today we seemed to lack fight, I don’t know why that was. I don’t think that’s been the case against say Juventus this year or in last year’s semi final.
But I do think we need the team to lift the fans when we next play.

I don't think we can actually win things. It just isn't something I think we can do under Poch now - after we've blown the easiest chance we'll get in a very long time.

Don't get me wrong, the hope is always going to be there. But the intrinsic belief that the team and Poch can cross that last hurdle, the one they've consistently crumbled in front of for four years straight? I don't think we're capable of that. Just a blunt assessment after the team crumbled yet again.

We have definitely, indisputably improved under Poch. We used to be the team that lost both the big games in the league and the big games in pursuit of trophies. Now we're just the team that always loses the big games in pusuit of trophies - the league hoodoos have all fallen, and that's down to him.

But this is one hurdle I just don't think we can overcome. One improvement I don't think Poch can make, and one I don't think the team has the mentality or stomach to handle, even if the desire is there.

I'm slowly resigning myself to the fact that we're perpetually going to be the f*cking 'play-pretty-but-win-nothing' crowd, even with Poch - and this, in a time when even f*cking Wenger wins three FA cups in four years and (possibly) might go out winning the Europa League as well.

So I agree with @Libero - I'm not going to expect anything different going forward. I thought we'd learn from the Juventus loss - pick up that ability to be winners, to be canny, to be ruthless. We didn't.

Re. top of the league, the game I'm thinking of was the season Leicester won it. We had Arsenal at home, they went down to ten men and we drew the game, should have lost it by the end, we were hanging on. If we won, we could have gone top and put Leicester under pressure when they went away to Watford later that evening. We never had the chance to go top again and Leicester won it fairly easily in the end.

Last season, semi final against Chelsea. They didn't even start with their best XI, Hazard on the bench. We had more of the play, I think we were the better side for long periods in the game. But we lost.

This season, knockout tie v Juventus. See above.

Now, semi-final against Utd. Started well but once they worked us out, we were so passive. Another chance to win something gone.

In each season, these players have had the opportunity to go beyond what we have had since the Redknapp era i.e. the 'Top 4 Cup.' We seem to fail the test in a similar way each season when it comes to these games. I do not think that is even debatable.

No, it’s not debatable that we have failed to win a trophy (which is basically the implication of what you are saying?)

I just think you can’t totally discount the aforementioned victories in CL and against Chelsea, even if they weren’t knockout cup games or to go top.

And whilst we may have a mental block, it could also just be that we’ve lost 3 games to Chelsea, Man U and Juventus - 3 very good teams. It’s a small sample size, that gets tied into decades of tottenham’s history well before any current staff or players were here.

Anyway I’m partly just trying to look at the other side of the argument. I’m as depressed as anyone that we’ve lost another big game against a big team.

Both this game and the Juve one have some things in common. Dominated early, played very well. Let the opposition back in, not strong enough in defense, and maybe lacked a bit of belief to get over the line.

We played well against Juve and first half today, so lots to build upon. How Poch shores up our defense is crucial. Its our foundation, and needs to be solid again next season.

I kinda agree with what you are saying and new season = fresh optimism but I do wonder what exactly the problem is getting over the line. 8 Semi final defeats in a row is a pretty horrific stat, all different teams and eras but it does smack of something slightly more troubling. Even breaking that down to the last 8 years, that's 4 semi finals we have failed to show the required character and resilience to just reach the final, not even win it, just reach the final.

Winning away at Chelsea is a big result, of course it is, but in a big knockout game, winner takes all not lose and move on to next week like the league, we have succeeded really only once against AC MIlan and possibly against Sheffield Utd in 2015 although we almost roostered that up as well. Other than that, every big game over two legs or one where it is win or die, we have died. Something has got to be collectively and individually wrong with that hasn't it? To say in 10 years or so you have managed to win 2 massive games and roostered up all the rest is pretty monumental tbh

One thing that noone’s really talked about is how fudging easy Utd’s second goal was. Goal kick, flick-on, square and finish from a midfield runner. Maybe just an issue with Dembele’s fitness, not tracking the runner, but you’d hope that it would take more than that to be so easily undone.

I don't understand why we don't have belief to get over the line though, we have plenty of seasoned internationals who play big games every week of the year.........it just doesn't wash with me. Its collective guts and bottle as well as on an individual level. People need to start taking responsibility as an individual first to drag the team forward and then collectively everyone takes responsibility as a result. Do your own job and do it well.......if 8-9 do that then you probably win the match. Its not a lot to ask in one big game every now and then.
