I'm amazed at how little attention this part of the article has received.

If a FO can't logic his way around the existence of a self-absorbed, insecure, gays/Jews/women/bacon hating magic wish fairy in the sky, how the fudge is he going to logic through the operation of an airliner?

I’d like to sing that line from Ironic by Alanis Morrisette.

    Not that.

I'd probably open the cabin door and have a crank just to weird everyone out.

As I said, watch this space.
Boeing / FAA are going to have their butts spanked. BIG TIME.
Orders already made for the MAX model are going to be cancelled.
And new orders will dry up.
All this for trying to match Airbus.
With an unsafe plane. where "critical" safety features are an OPTION.
CRIMINAL. Let their goose be cooked.

Just to expand on this, the Lion Air flight radar shows over 20 separate trim down events. Spaced at a minimum of 5 seconds apart (that's how often MCAS is allowed to operate) that's somewhere between 1.5 and 2 minutes for two (supposedly trained and capable) pilots to work out that what was happening to them was the same thing that happened on the same aircraft to the previous crew just a few hours previously.

Autopilot has massively improved safety but also created a generation of pilots who can't cope without it.

An accident where the crew were not behind the plane is a rare thing indeed.

One reported fact not mentioned in the article is that the deadhead pilot in the Lion Air flavour of garbage airways flew for another airline. He was able to quickly and correctly spot the fix for the problem, yet the two Garbage Airways pilots couldn't. Neither could the two in the following flight that crashed.

Ethiopian Airlines has history of rapid pilot progression (I won't accuse them of undertraining as that could lead to legal issues).

If “deadhead pilot of garbage airways” wasn’t going to get you in trouble, then I guess you’re on safe footing!!! :D

A deadhead is a pilot hitching a ride in the 3rd cabin seat!

The following was published by Boeing on Nov 6th 2018. Looks to me like something any half-decent airline with safety in mind would ensure their crews were familiar with.

Now. Far be it from me to tell the Ethiopian government how to do their jobs, but if I were in their place (in control of both the airline and the investigation) and I had signed copies of training sheets showing receipt and understanding of the above for the crew that crashed, it would have leaked to the press by now. But that's just me.

Boeing fudged up, total cop out to blame the Ethiopian or any other government for that matter. They need to be criminally investigated.
