For me I'd have to go with 1992. Some absolute cracking albums released that year.
  • REM - Automatic for the People
  • Faith No More - Angel Dust
  • Alice in Chains - Dirt
  • Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion
  • Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works
  • Rage Against the Machine - self-titled
  • L7 - Bricks are Heavy
  • Sonic Youth - Dirty
  • The Lemonheads - It's a Shame About Ray
  • Stone Temple Pilots - Core
  • Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun
  • Ministry - Psalm 69
  • The Cure - Wish
  • Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
  • Megadeth - Countdown to Extinction

This year.

Smokin' new releases and tours from Cory Wong and The Wongnotes, Fearless Flyers, Bahamas, The Bros (Canada, not that UK dreck).

1987 takes a bit of beating:

The Smiths - Strangeways, Here We Come
Dinosaur Jr - You’re Living All Over Me
The Go-Betweens - Tallulah
REM - Document
Pixies - Come On Pilgrim
The Housemartins - The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death
The Wedding Present - George Best
The Cure - Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me
Echo and the Bunnymen - Echo and the Bunnymen
Aztec Camera - Love
Spacemen 3 - The Perfect Prescription
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Darklands
Prince - Sign o’the Times
U2 - The Joshua Tree
Big Black - Songs About fudging
Husker Du - Warehouse Songs and Stories
That Petrol Emotion - Babble
Public Enemy - Yo! Bum Rush the Show

1991, the year music peaked. Back when you'd watch MTV for hours just to see some bands you liked. Some albums only included for reference.

Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I & II
Metallica - Black Album
Nirvana - Nevermind
Skid Row - Slave To The Grind
Ugly Kid Joe - As Ugly As The Wanna Be
Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Pearl Jam - Ten
Spin Doctors - Pocket Full Of Kryptonite
Mr. Big - Lean Into It
Massive Attack - Blue Lines
U2 - Achtung Baby
Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open
REM - Out Of Time
Genesis - We Can't Dance
Temple Of The Dog - Temple Of The Dog

You were both doing so well until you mentioned U2.

Liked Achtung Baby

Yes, it’s got some decent songs, and they purposely seemed to take themselves less seriously during that period.

I like the very early albums - Boy and (particularly) October.

It's the exemplary MOR album.

There’s actually some pretty weird songs on there: Mothers of the Disappeared and Exit, in particular. One Tree Hill is also pretty unusual.

The singles that were taken from it are in MOR territory, for sure - and are by far the worst things on the album imo.
