Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

"After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC News.

Ali had suffered for three decades from Parkinson's, a progressive neurological condition that slowly robbed him of both his legendary verbal grace and his physical dexterity. A funeral service is planned in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

It's a rather long piece detailing his life.

Now you see me, now you don't.
George thinks he will, but I know he won't

It will be a Killer, And a chiller, And a thrilla.
When I get the gorilla in Manila

My face is so pretty; you don't see a scar,
Which proves I'm the king of the ring by far.

Muhammed Ali, you were my hero rest in peace Champ

Hopefully When We Were Kings will be shown on TV soon as part of the tributes. It's a great film and worth checking out if you can. I'd highly recommend David Reminck's book Kings of the World too.

The beauty of this great man's history is that he truely is a legend. And true legends never die. He won't be forgotten; he did too much in and out of the ring, stood by his principles when faced with adversity.

Very sad day. I know people question other's sincerity when they post 'RIP' posts about the famous but this was the one I was dreading.

So many memories, the Thrilla in Manila, the Rumble in the Jungle, Harry Carpenter's commentary "My GHod, he's won the title back at 32!", the Cooper fight, the Listen fights - it's buildup and the poem.

The handsomest, fastest, The Greatest! RIP Muhammad Ali.

A true legend in all areas of his public life, he was bigger than his sport and an inspiration to millions.

Another of my teenage heroes has gone and I am not ashamed to say I have a tear in my eye writing this, I know they may be a few who will disagree but imo in his prime he was the greatest boxer to have graced our planet, he was also a man who believed and stuck to his principles.

    RIP Ali.

Incredible boxer certainly the most entertaining and one of the best.

Somewhat hard of thinking though, despite what many people seem to think.
