I also don't think one person has the capacity to effectively combine the roles. Being a first team coach and a recruitment & selection specialist require very skills sets. Do we want Poch taking time off preparing the first team to go and watch 16 year olds in Ghana etc?

My hope is that we'll largely shut down transfers, and put all efforts into John McDermott and the internal production line

Well, one can certainly hope, and there's little wrong with it, I suppose. ;)

That's quite an extreme example that you are picking out there @gutterboy !! The reality is that there will still be a scouting network in operation and if Poch deems it necessary to watch a 16 year old, I think you can be completely sure that it will be for an amazing 16 year old! A lot is being made of an article missing out on any direct quotes. What we know is that Poch has always had final say on transfers. We also know that Rebecca Caplehorn does a lot of the administrative side of transfers and Levy is always involved as well. Between the scouting department, Poch, Rebecca and Levy do we really need another person in there? By all accounts Paul Mitchell was there to establish a more data-centric scouting model and it appears that he has done so.

If that 'data centric' recruitment model came up with Sissoko at 27 for £30m , then it needs a significant re-boot imo.

Of course, we have no idea whether it did. So it cannot really be used as a stick to beat one approach or another.

We also don't know whether we paid anything remotely like 30 million quid for Sissoko. Personally I very much doubt that was the case. Daniel Levy doesn't tend to pay out those kind of Sums and certainly not in one go.
I would imagine that if any of Chairman Levys deals that we have previously have knowledge of are to be used as a benchmark in this case, the fee is made up of a small payment up front. A yearly fee on top for the duration of the contract and various extras based on appearances and personal and club achievements. So I would Imagine that Sissoko would only cost 30 million if we kept him for the duration of his six year contract and probably won the title etc during that period to trigger extra payment clauses.

This of course is total supposition on my part based on how Daniel historically likes to structure player purchases. Newspapers are not a reliable source of transfer fee news and Newcastle will have quoted an inflated fee to keep the loyal Geordie hordes from attempting another boycoutt.

My guess is that he is on gardening leave so that he cannot go to another club with our list of targets.

I thought I read it he was serving a long notice period - maybe 6 months, although I might be imagining that. Always possible to negotiate though at that level.
He wasn't sacked, it was his decision to leave, so if things were relatively amicable there's no reason why he wouldn't have carried on working after handing in his notice, then maybe a bit of gardening leave.

That article makes little sense to me. Why would Ashley take a lesser offer from Levy if Everton were prepared to pay more? I suspect we were pretty desperate on Deadline day, having failed with one or two other targets, and Levy knew Poch was calling for additions, so reluctantly had to cave to at least match Evertons offer.

Anyway, it is all pure speculation as to the actual price, the fact remains we got a 27 year old who hasn't exactly set the world alight and is not what we really required - ie someone to be able to provide back up to either Dembele or Eriksen. Someone that has the X factor in either dribbling, guile or pace, and who is a game changer? Whatever the question was, and whatever the price, I don't believe Sissoko meets any of the required criteria.
