England / UK / GB

Ossie

Random question.
I'm doing some of the cricket coverage for my job, and my bosses way up the line have insisted that we use the location description 'Britain' at the start of my story. (as in Ossie reporting from Britain).
I think that's fudging ridiculous.
Is it not England? Isn't Britain not actually a place at all? I thought Great Britain was the island (ie England, Scotland and Wales) and United Kingdom was all of that plus Northern Ireland.
Or am I completely wrong?

yep Great Britain is the island, the UK is Great Britain and Northern Ireland

whilst its technically correct to say any of the three if it were me I would go with England

Depends whether Andy Murray's winning or not.
 damn right. He lost yesterday didn't he? So England this week.

I think your definitions are right Ossie, but terms like Britain and UK are used pretty interchangeably. Guess your higher ups just want to use whatever term they think the audience will be most familiar with?

Our country is England. All the rest is politics.

Britain is as vague and pointless a geographical identity as the eurozone.

To be British is even more vague, before independence many citizens of the British empire would describe themselves as British.

Is it for a foreign audience.. if not that's ridiculous. Besides normally they just say the venue and city they are in.

Considering you're reporting on the cricket between England and Australia, kinda makes sense to go with England?

I find it interesting that the Holland I know is actually meant to be called The Netherlands. It's still called Holland by other countries though as they do not use The Netherlands...

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - we just call it the United Kingdom for short. We became a united kingdom when our island (Great Britain) became a single country with Ireland, but then we had to change that to Northern Ireland when the rest of Ireland broke away. Before we were the United Kingdom, we were just Great Britain as England and Wales had already united with Scotland.

Just to point out the Cricket is England and wales Cricket board.. Scotland are not included as they have there own side, as do Ireland. Or better known as the ECB so one would suggest this isn't the bloody Olympics.

And you wouldn't have won the Ashes without your Welsh ring-ins either #hollowvictory #burn #hashtag

That diagram covers it quite succinctly in that the islands shown separately are not part of England, Scotland or Wales and have their own form of government.

The other main islands are part of those countries - Isle of Wight is in England, Anglesey is in Wales and the Hebrides, Shetland and Orkney are in Scotland.

are you serious ????????

when, why, and how did you think Ireland became a part of the British Isles???

absolute fudging madness, you can call it "state: or "island" but I can safely say you tell my wife (or Chich's, or my mum) she is British and you would be in a very bad place educationally.

ignorance is the most destructive attack, but the weakest defence (I just made that up by the way!!)

Mostly by people referring to it as part of the British Isles on maps for about 450 years. It's only people who get all shirty about independence who pretend it's not.

Yep they do not want to be called British and why should they when you see what happened down the years towards them. I sometimes feel people think im some sort of xenophobe which im most certainly not my views on immigration are it is unsustainable. But regards the Irish they have always come over here and we have always moved over there.

The two countries are close and should share ties, but all countries should be ruled completely by people that the population have elected, this is why i hate the EU so much.

Do not want to take this thread off topic but back up what you say, if i called my Irish family(by marriage) British i would lose my knees, and they are never anything but nice to me.
