Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

Why did the Labour peers not show up to vote down the election bill last night? That is some dangerous Orbanic stuff they let slide through (on top of all the other sinister brick the tories are pushing through).

Thought I would comment on the Conservative proposal to sell off housing association property.

Honestly though my father benefited from it in the 80s in wood green. I am totally against such a short term measure which is done just to buy votes. Will make it harder and harder for future generations to be able to find anywhere to rent.

Everything is for sale with this lot and their short term outlook disgusts me.

The socially responsible thing to do would to be to tax second home ownership, foreign ownership and private landlording out of existence. One house owned by one household, and all the leaches cut out.

I've had some brilliant private landlords over the years.

Paid a fair price, issues were dealt with quickly, a very civilised way to live, accommodation as a service.

really? so massive companies will then be the only landlords? What could possibly go wrong??

I’m a landlord, I provide a good service and try to look after my Tenents, why am I a leech?

No - the state would be the only landlord. But ideally almost everyone would be able to own their own, as supply and demand would settle without the competition from profiteers.

I just think morally no one should be able to profit from the basic human need for shelter. It's like hoarding food then selling it on to the poor for highest price you can. Nothing person - that's what neo-liberalism has encouraged the wealthy to do for the last 40 years. I just think its about deeper ethics.

food is also a basic need should we nationalise the supermarkets and farms?

I do have to hold my hand up here and say I own my own home. But we have a flat we rent out in Worthing and one in Hove. I moved into property early 2000s thanks to Gordon Browns tax grab on pensions.

Im the same but I do wonder if i am pricing people out of the market.

Had to go into property after Gordon Brown screwed my pension savings.

I'd suggest localise. Tax heavily on distance between point of production and point of consumption, on everything except fresh fruit and veg. Break the complex supply chains and get people eating primarily local, seasonal and more natural food again.

so a lot of turnips for breakfast lunch and dinner then. What about clothes? Should we all wear the same locally produced garms?

without getting silly … what the government should be doing is building more council houses. Home ownership has never been for everyone, some people aspire to it some don’t. Some because of lifestyle choices some because of convenience.

only around 20% of properties are in the private rented sector, and I would guess that a load of them are through massive companies as well. Build to rent will increase this with more huge players coming in to sector.
