Xavi Simons

I've been watching Xavi vs Poland.
A very strange pace of game, loads of players just walking and walking and then they all look super boiling hot, which is odd because it must be 10 at night in the Netherlands?

A few nice movements from him. A lot of slow play. Probably more interesting that Van der Ven is left back but coming inside and running right up into the front line, which is bizarre compared to what he does for Spurs.

Ooh he just did a nice little moment and the ball flashed wide.

He does play like Madders to some extent.
Was a pretty poor game from Xavi last night. It's interesting that in the Dutch press, it is being reported that Koeman already knows 9 of the 11 players to start the first game in the US (assuming that we qualify of course), and judging from his own comments over the last few months, that makes sense. The only two positions that are still up for grabs are left-back (Micky or Aké) and right-wing(ish - Xavi or Frimpong). The style of play of Xavi and Frimpong is quite different of course, one going inside, the other one relying on speed to go outside and play a greater role in defense if needed, liberating Dumfries to join the attack - so they can be alternated depending on the opposition. But Micky did his case no harm yesterday, playing a solid game and showing off his attacking potential on occasion. Xavi on the other hand was pretty anonymous. He would have been a certain starter for Oranje about 18 months ago, but that's not so evident now. Big season coming up for both of them, that might suit us very nicely.

And perhaps just to add to that: In interviews in the Netherlands, Xavi has expressed his great excitement at signing for us. He intimated having spoken to Chelsea as well ("there were many conversations over the summer" he said), but he is really eager to make a difference at the Lane. That, too, bodes very well for the months to come.

To be fair I can understand him having a poor/average game if he's playing on the right. He is much better centrally or left, and I'd imagine that's where he will be for us. Not bothered in the slightest if he didn't perform that well, just as long as he stays fit its fine - can't wait to see him pull on the shirt :)....

Simons has also revealed how he spoke to Timo Werner, his former team-mate at Leipzig, before joining Spurs.
Werner spent 18 months on loan at Tottenham and told Simons that he would enjoy his time in north London.
“He told me a lot about the club’s greatness and the fantastic fans,” said Simons. “And he said he thought it was the right place for me to learn and improve. Thanks for your trust, Timo!”

If Xavi is a hit, at least Timo would have scored an important goal for us

Well, that is what you hope with players like that. Then there's the matter of 'will they gel'? That's the lottery of football. Some players that really should fit a team, don't. And players that probably shouldn't suit a team, somehow do anyway.

There's just no way of knowing. Sometimes it just clicks, and sometimes it doesn't.
We just have to hope and pray that we've hit the jackpot with this one.
Click.

(Read this post game of his first start).

(I know I'm being overly and prematurely confident on this)
