Width

Not a big deal but it occurred to me today whilst driving along the M4... Sunderland had a 6 man defence. The back 4 were tight, with 2 wingers filling in at full back to make it a back 6. We could not break this down.

Then we tried that "six at the back" style formation for about nine seconds with Alli at right back and Trippier tight to Toby... one easy pass to Van Aanholt (who was tight to the wing!) who runs behind the full back position cutting inside to either square it or slot into the goal. Just like we were trying to do for the whole game!

No surprise how effective Chadli's substitution was today.

Gave us width to stretch the game and with Alli playing from deep and Lamela not on the field to occupy the same pockets as Eriksen, our play was fluid and expansive.

He and Son in the wide roles did give us an extra dynamic, but you can't ignore the number of times Rose and Trippier got forward not to mention Rose being very unlucky not to score in the first half.
