Transfer thread

There is an element of truth in it being a wasted spot, we deserve to be in it for winning the EL, but as you say it seems to make no difference to the clubs approach.

You could make the same argument with Saudi Sportswashing Machine tbf

If we are not going to build a squad capable of competing , we may as well stick to the EL

Might aswell be in the championship aswell. We won't win the prem. So what's the point? Lets hope we get relegated eh?

Spurs getting CL (rather than EL, rather than ECL, rather than nothing at all) increases our budget.
We spend our budget on transfers and wages.
So our CL place will enable us to buy better players. We spend what we bring in.
Wait and see.
Overall budget I agree with but it's never really seemed to make a difference in terms of the calibre or pedigree of the players we sign. It just allows us to purchase more of the same from the same pool we were were already buying from. It's not so much related to this window so far but our history, whenever we've qualified for the CL it's not really brought a higher standard of player in imo. There will be some examples and exceptions but generally no, our highest profiles have often signed when we weren't actually CL qualified, ie. the likes of Berbatov or Romero.

...and Modric. What a signing. Let's get THAT scout out of storage and send him globe-trotting again!!!!!

Do you remember how we spent ages trying to sign Tosin Adarabioyo over 2 or 3 transfer windows?

He ended up at Chelsea, is now their 12th choice CB and they are trying shift him out already! What a strange career move that was...

Chelsea are really an odd case. Their model has clearly brought success to the club but strangely at the expense of individual player career success. I can only think of Cole Palmer as a success story in recent times. They seem to come in get chewed up and spat out and the club rolls on.

I get that transfers take time, of course, but I do find it a bit strange that we have a whole team of employees at the club whose only job is to basically scout potential signings for the club, and that we at this point have only really signed one senior player. Would it be impossible to basically have transfers lined up before the window? Doesnt a lot of teams do that?

We don't really know how this works, and I'm sure its tricky as hell to actually get a player you want in. It's just a bit frustrating to see other clubs go out there and sign what they need, while we're apparently doing very little or failing at what we are doing.

Then again, I'm hopeful of us working hard behind the scenes to pull a few rabbits out of the hat. I just wish we could have more players in earlier for them to gel with the team and be ready for when the league starts.

Or you could see it as 5 first team squad players, 3 of whom we're just lined up well in advance.
