They were the 2 most sought after strikers in the Summer though. Maybe it was a bit of a barren window for star signings but everyone thought they were the 2 best available strikers out there.

We are linked with the Porto striker and being quoted 80+ million and I doubt many on here know anything much about him. Good strikers are hard to find nowadays. Gyokeres had 100 odd goals in just 2 seasons! Yes it was Portugal but that included a decent record in CL games.

I just mean, are we better off focusing on scouting and looking at the next big thing or going for the so called best available players and paying a premium. Arsenal and United both thought they were paying extra for a more guaranteed return but its still a lottery aint it?
I would say we are best going for a player whose attributes best fit. Many times that is indeed the player bubbling under who is next up. It's less risky in terms of the total fee and there *should* be less pressure on them as well. However sometimes that player best suited might well be the name brand guy. It all comes down to you scouting and evaluation of how a player will likely fit and develop.

The problem with your premise is that neither of those players were actually top bracket. So both signings are gambles hoping to unearth a top quality player, with Sesko it was always known he wouldn't hit the ground running and honestly might never really make it to the very top level. He was a very speculative buy.

Gyokeres had loads of doubts, again I don't know how you can think of him as a top bracket player to be honest.
Was gyokeres not billed as the missing piece, the game changer that would elevate arsenal to the title?

By some, who had only seen his numbers, but haven't seen him play. I always said I didn't think he'd be great, because 95% of his goals were tap ins or he was all on his own with no defender in sight. You simply don't get that amount of time and space in the premier league. He's a flat track bully.

That was the narrative but in equal measure people said that he has much to prove to be considered that elusive striker. It was more the fact that finally Arsenal got a striker rather than Arsenal got an elite player

Saw plenty of him in the CL and he looked absolutely streets ahead of anyone on the pitch. I still think he is a very good player, 6 months at Arsenal paying for a side that play more fluid without a striker doesn't change that for me.

So who is the top bracket forward, take kane and lewondwhatsisname out of it because of their age and mbappe and haaland because of the cost, who else is there?
