Toby Alderweireld

Loved the reception for him this evening. We were giving him big claps when he was warming up as well.

He's so integral to our system, some of his passing when he came on was straight up sublime. What a wonderful player to watch. Should have scored his header chance though ;)

"It was an unusual injury, one in a million. It almost never happens in football," Alderweireld said. "I got a hard knock on the nerve on the right side of my knee, so the nerve was shut down. All of my leg was shut down.

"When that happens, it takes a long time to 'restart' the nerve again, so it wasn't an injury you could put a time limit on. If you pull a hamstring, you will probably be out for four-to-six weeks. With a nerve, you don't know.

"My leg didn't work and I had to start all over again. The nature of the problem also meant that for a while, my foot didn't work properly, so I had do as much recovery work as possible without using my foot.

"I could walk, but not as I normally would, because it was difficult to lift up my foot. It was difficult for the medical staff to put a time on my recovery because we didn't know. It could have been two weeks, six weeks, maybe three months more.

"We just had to do everything we could to stimulate the nerve and ensure I could come back as quickly as possible. It was very frustrating, but I had to use the frustration to work as hard as possible and be ready to come back."

Maybe that is as close as that they can put it?

Well, my philosophy when it comes to setting expectations to anyone is 'Underpromise and Overdeliver'. Fully understand they will get things wrong from time to time and I really don't think anyone expects a time-frame to the minute or even to the day.

Isn't that what the club have been doing anyway?

But you do know that IF the club gives a date, time and they get it wrong there will be fans bitching about that as well. Not saying you would but others will.

You know that isn't the case. Just a clearer update than "soon" would be appreciated. "soon" could mean tomorrow or 2027 for all we know.

Well, listening to what Toby said, even doctors couldn't be accurate because of the nature of the injury. So 'soon' is all that anybody would get. There was no clarity to be introduced except that they had to wait and see how his recovery was going.

Well that's fair enough. Some injuries mean you can't always provide a clear cut update.
