Thomas Frank - Head Coach

We can beat Saudi Sportswashing Machine. They’re playing poorly and as seen this season we can be the perfect team to play in order to find form. But, the only way we’re getting away from looking at the relegation zone is by doing it ourselves. Saddens me to say that. We’re not playing terribly of late, two good results in a row can change the outlook.

If you can’t tell, I am trying to convince myself of the above by writing this

Every appointment is a risk, and you can make more than one mistake in a row.

Frank, regardless of how he measured up on criteria, whatever thoughts the club had, isn't the guy. To believe this guy is going to take us from 2 wins in 16, this horrendous home record, failure to dominate any games and is going to somehow turn that into a top 6 side (minimum bar) just isn't realistic.

The question really is do they fire now or in summer, the argument for now would be even a 2-3 game new manager bounce would be enough to keep us out of trouble.

Then summer you try again, my perspective remains get a manager than can get you top 6-8 with this squad, and then you give them two top signings, that with no Europe next year should give us a good shot at putting the club back into proper league positions, and you add again the following summer and push on from there.

I’m just almost morbidly intrigued by the idea that the club is sticking with Frank. It’s interesting to think that they have a level of confidence in him that might pay off down the line. That they didn’t sack him after West Ham made me think they really believe in his project.

It’s going to be a big call to double down on him in the summer with Poch available. Personally, I want Poch. But in a weird way I’m going to be impressed if they stick with Frank. The commitment to him would be admirable.

Do you think its an active decision to keep Frank? Or just they havent checked in for a while to see what is going on? There's lots going on in the Bahamas and Argentina (where they live respectively) this time of year don't you know. Lunches, golf events, regattas etc.

I’m not sure why anybody is surprised we’re sticking with him. We stuck by Ange all through last season; terrible in the PL but better in Europe.

Same as this year, only this time we’re in a tougher European competition and qualified 4th in the league stage.

Not one mention of nepo-babies, you're slacking mate

We were favourites to win the Europa and were in no danger of getting relegated, and we barely had 11 players to put on the pitch. I think they understood that sacking a manager to take over a squad with barely 11 fit players each game day was a waste of time.

Now, they could have sacked Frank after West Ham. It was before we got to another crazy level with injuries. And the briefings seemed to suggest there was a chance they pull the trigger. But they didn’t. We’re out of the FA Cup. We’re probably not winning the Champions League. We’re 6 points above 18th in the league. There is almost literally nothing to play for and we’re looking down rather than up. I think it’s really interesting that they’ve kept going with Frank given those circumstances. I think they believe in him more than people realise. But still, will be a massive call to double down on him with Poch available.

ah Fǔck I actually respect your knowledge and opinion on a lot of things (apart from with Levy where you are wrong) so this has me worried.

When did you put that bet on?
I both put money on and laid it off at different times. It was in December though that I made my biggest bets on Spurs to go down. I looked at our fixture list and just couldn’t see where a win was coming from. I made the bets thinking that I would be able to lay them off as relegation looked more and more likely, though I didn't think things would be looking THIS bad right now and I also thought the club would've sacked the manager by now (I'm actually starting to wish that I hadn't laid so much off and had just run with my original bets).

We were never favourites to win the Europa. The favoured were Porto, Man Utd, and Bilbao. We were below those three... and Roma as well. It was a very good win for us and it is tougher than Brentford staying in the PL.

Also we were favourites to win Euro Conference League in the inaugural year - how did that go?

1. Tottenham Hotspur

While Spurs were disappointed to miss out on Champions League qualification last season, it could prove a blessing in disguise. The Europa League offers them a genuine opportunity to win a European competition, something they haven't managed since 1984.

Juggling the Premier League and Europe has already proved difficult in 2024/25 as Spurs struggle for consistency, but their talented squad and Postecoglou's second-season record boost the Lilywhites' chances of winning an elusive trophy.

Tottenham - 9/2 to win the Europa League

Priced up as 9/2 favourites following the draw, Spurs will face some tricky ties in Roma, Galatasaray and Hoffenheim, but will fancy their chances against the lesser known Qarabag FK and Elfsborg. Just like Manchester United, Spurs will have to travel to Turkey for their match with Galatasaray, though one of their other away games is a much shorter journey - up North. Spurs will head to Ibrox for an all British occasion in Glasgow to face Phillipe Clement's side, something they have not done since 1962. Look away now Spurs fans as not to jinx it, but you would go on to win the Cup Winners' Cup that season, knocking out Rangers in the second round en route to glory. It was the first time an English club lifted a major European trophy.

The favourites kick off their Europa League campaign tonight.

Having watched Man United kick off their 2024/25 Europa League campaign with a 1-1 home draw against FC Twente, Tottenham and Rangers make their tournament bows tonight. Tottenham host Azerbaijan Premier League leaders Qarabağ FK, while Rangers are at Malmo FF - 1st in Allsvenskan after 24 matches played.

Tottenham are the 5/1 bookmakers' favourites to win the 2024/25 Europa League on BetVictor. Ange Postecoglou's side are a shortest 4/1 to win the tournament. Man United, meanwhile, have drifted from 5/1 before last night's draw with FC Twente at Old Trafford to a best price 6/1 on Sky Bet.

But that's not part of the narrative, my friend!! So it must be ignored or negated....

I think there's a very good chance he's essentially done come the summer no matter what unless there's some kind of exceptional run of performances and results in the final months. And that they're not seeing the value in replacing him with a caretaker manager mid season, or haven't seen value in that so far at least.

A difference between this season and last season is that we were actually good at times under Ange last season until the injuries got bad.

This season the resemblance of good in the PL seems to be that we're sometimes the better team on the pitch in some games, but mostly in some parts of some games.

I've asked before what happens if we get unlucky before we get good, having imo been somewhat lucky in the first third(ish) of the season. Arguably in the last weeks/months and a bit we've found out. I still don't think we're good, though we're been decent at times. Bit unlucky I think, a couple of results could have swung our way.

What's the narrative? Spurs might have been viewed as favourites by some of the media, some of the bookies...there were still plenty -- including many on this board -- who looked at our league form and wrote off any notion of winning it.

I don't know why being favourites for the tournament was ever meant to be some sort of 'put down' in regards to the achievement - A big part of the Spurzzzy tag whether it's harsh or not is because we don't deliver when we are expected to and don't deliver on the big occassion. We delivered on both accounts....

Thankfully this manager got the opportunity to put all his eggs in one basket before ENIC gave him the boot, unlike when Mourinho wanted to rest players for PL games so we stood a better chance of ending our trophy drought but the powers that be decided that was unacceptable and Ryan Mason would give us a better opportunity at glory…

We also started well this season - especially away from home - "until the injuries got bad"... actually far worse than last season

But what applied last season does not seem to apply now....
