Thomas Frank - Head Coach

An athlete to me is someone like Sissoko or Jenas etc. Lacking in football qualities while making up for it with their physical attributes, which without they wouldn't have a career.

Doku has some good physical attributes, but hes a technical player first, you can't change direction whilst in control of the ball at the speed he does without having good technical attributes.
He slaloms like a skier but passes with the intelligence of a fish

That’s harsh on Jenas

Agree regarding Sissoko, but not Jenas. Jenas definitely had football ability and technique, you only had to see some of the goals he scored to see that he had technique. Sissoko on the other hand....

Part of what I really like about some of our younger players is that they seem to have a great mix of physical and technical qualities. Vuskovic, Bergvall, Gray (more stamina so far, but far from weak), Moore, Donley seems quite strong too, Lankshear.

Not so many of the technically excellent, but will always struggle physically or the other way around types.

Less physical players for sure can be excellent, but the step up becomes that much harder.

Bergvall I really noticed for being strong physically in the CM, really impressed by him all round. He will have some more 'lows' as well as highs, but I really do think he is going to be special.....

He said that it was the big change he had to make when he joined
He worked hard and added the muscle

Not to rehash old debates but regarding Jenas, what was his best attribute? It wasn't his passing, his dribbling, his reading of the game, his shooting or his vision (none existent). It was his industry, work rate and stamina. So his best attributes were athletic ones and none were actually to do with the key elements necessary for a football player. That's why ultimately his career was meh, because his abilities were meh and so was he as a player.

I agree his athleticism was a real strong quality of his. But he could certainly dribble with the ball, and his passing was fine albeit not creative. I think his issue was mentality or confidence, don't know which.

But I was surprised to see you mention him in the same breath as Sissoko as I know how little you think of him as a footballer :D and to me they are poles apart in terms of ability....

Jenas’ issue was being shy/ introverted/ safe i.e. he would spend the whole game passing sideways and backwards and not daring to do… but with his back against the wall he would suddenly change completely and ping goals and passes

Yep
He had the tools but didn’t have the inspiration to use them

He's no where near as bad Sissoko obviously but he's of the same ilk. His best attributes were athletic ones rather than football related abilities. That's not my cup of tea in terms of a player.

If we're still talking about about about Jenas, well he was one of those players who had a bit of everything. He could pass, run, dribble, tackle, shoot, take free kicks, stamina, he was a complete around player....the problem was he lacked confidence in his own ability to be the best...and that's why he was always on the periphery of being a great player. Good enough to get in the England squad, but not be in the team. Good enough to play in a Spurs midfield regularly, but not at ManU. He could comfortably support players like a R.Keane or Berba or a Lennon, but never be confident enough to show he could be the best player in that team. To really be the best you need a bit of inner arrogance and selfishness to show you are the best. I think he was happy to show he was good enough, but not confident to show he could be the best. As someone else said Spurs at the time was probably a safe place for him.
If you really watched him and Gerrard the main difference was that confidence and arrogance and desire to be the best. One believed he was and the other didn't.
