Thomas Frank - Head Coach

With the clear depth on focus being in a purely floating role in advanced areas and not deep. If the trend was him in a Modric role who would be picking the ball off the defence ala Modric then I would think that mapnwould be reversed

Anyway, like I say, I hope he does well under Frank despite my doubts and I hope he proves me wrong. If he can keep on his feet more I will be ecstatic
The modric role was only really in those first 10 games, he stopped coming as deep after he came back from injury and did play further forward (and IMO the team suffered for it) but as per your heat map he played as the left sided 8 rather than as a 10.

But he was def floating in the hole, he was playing loads in and around the box, flicks and reverse passes on both sides of thr box with the inverted FBs when it was working.

Anyway, it's been a good convo.

I would describe it almost as a box to box role of sorts in those early games, but doing deep laying playmaker duties through to no.10/second striker stuff - but to be honest I think it was more him being eager to impress and not being fully up to speed with the ins and outs of the role that Ange wanted him to play.

Yeah you either have to have pace in legs or pace of thought.

He has pace of thought, problem is most players are behind his pace.
This "he hangs on to ball too long" is because no one makes anything happen for him.
How many times has kulu broke forward with the ball, looked up to put a ball in and there's either no one there or if they they're vastly out numbered.

I would dispute he played in the hole in those early games - he was up and down the pitch getting on the ball from as deep as our box and as far up as the oppo 6 yard box. I'd wager he was covering more ground than any of our players in that period
Like you say he didn't play in the hole. We played an inverted triangle in midfield and Maddison played the left side of the triangle. It's a misconception that he played in the hole, he never did.

When Kulu was moved from the right he did indeed play in the hole but Maddison was used differently.

That's his 23/24 heat map so anecdotally there might have been moments he dropped deep, but he most def spent majority of his time as the free/advanced role in a CM 3.
If you look at Sarr's heat map for the same 10n game period it's essentially a mirror but just biased towards the right. We played an inverted triangle with Maddison and Sarr being either side of it.

A day in the life of Brentford manager Thomas Frank

4 months ago - so its quite recent. He starts very early and reads a lot. \
Around 10 mins there is a technical review of a past game - watch it to get a sense of how he works with JC and Newton and the level of detail to player positioning in game.
