Was watching it yesterday and they commented on for a Saturday the crowds not being there. I don't get it, as the lineups in terms of player quality is as good as I've ever seen it in this country.

What is the issue?

Friends with the old Sussex CEO and we had a chat a couple of weeks back, his opinion is

- Added layer of Cricket makes the summer expensive for those that also go to T20
- Rebrand within 5 years is confusing, the franchises have name changes, many to IPL monikers
- Confusion in that home fans are in grounds seeing their players with the "away" team, people just generally dont know who to root for and which team they prefer

Ultimately the largest audience is also the county fan, there isnt a new audience big enough and those county fans are feeling loyalty towards their clubs that they see being killed off

I think there is alot of merit in what he said TBH

I don't follow cricket, although I do like the game, I suspect it's similar to golf, which I do play and love.
It's too long for the modern generation and the governing bodies want to "grow the game" so come up with "more relevant advances".
Problem is the young aren't really that interested, the ones that are initially interested fade away (it what kids do) and you are left with those who would have gravitated to it regardless.
Big problem is you turn off the older generation, it's no longer the game they loved.

You also turn them off and they take their kids with them.

I also think they have shat on their existing base, they changed most of the names of the teams 5 years in so you have taken money off families who have purchased loads of merch for their kids and now its all out of date already. That look like a cash grab

Yeah what @MartyFunkhouser laid out above makes total sense.

No idea what the answer is, problem being most young players coming through want to play the shorter versions of the game above test cricket which is sad to hear. Test cricket is such a great test of skills and the T20 stuff should be a little sideshow rather than the main event that it appears to be turning into....
