The Centre Forward thread

Moores looked like Maradona compared to his regular team mate Gerry Armstrong. What Ardiles and Villa must have thought when they arrived in '78 and saw those two as our forwards I don't believe has ever been recorded. Mario Kempes and Leopoldo Luque they were not.

Neither were 1st division material but Armstrong did look like he cared and gave his all for the cause.

Kempes turning up begging to sign always makes me chuckle. Shreeves I think it was not understanding a word

This will paint a clear picture of why we need a goalscorer. This is Premierleague goals & assists averages out over the number of games listed. Except for Solanke where I did it based on the last 3 seasons.

Porro 30 Games / 2.3 Goals / 4.9 Assists
Spence 20 Games / 0.2 Goals / 0.7 Assists
Udogie 25 Games / 1.0 Goals / 1.7 Assists
Robertson 25 Games / 0.9 Goals / 4.5 Assist
JPVH 30 Games / 1.1 Goals / 1.1 Assists
VDV 30 Games / 2.8 Goals / 1.2 Assists
Danso 20 Games / 0.5 Goals / 0.9 Assists
Senesi 20 Games / 1.1 Goals / 1.7 Assists
Tonali 30 Games / 1.9 Goals / 1.5 Assists
Fernandes 30 Games / 2.1 Goals / 3.3 Asssit
Bentancur 20 Games / 1.6 Goals / 1.4 Assists
Gray 20 Games / 0.8 Goals / 0.8 Assists
Gallagher 25 Games / 3.1 Goals / 2.3 Assists
Maddison 25 Games 6.2 Goals / 5.7 Assists
Kudus 30 Games / 5.4 Goals / 6.4 Assists
Kulusevski 20 Games / 3.8 Goals / 3.8 Assist
Solanke 30 Games / 10.4 Goals / 4.2 Assists
Richarlison 20 Games / 5.4 Goals / 2.3 Assists
Savinho 30 Games / 1.1 Goals / 6.8 Assists
Tel 20 Games / 2.7 Goals / 1.4 Assists

Total Goals: 54.4
Total Assists: 56.6
Own goals makes up the 2.2 difference

This would be around upper mid table for goals scored most seasons.

why not both
If done right, that would likely be a good route to take.
But we might not need to.
I want to see how Solanke works for a season under De Zerbi as I'm of the opinion that he's got what it takes to score enough.
It may be in a year or two we upgrade even more from him but my suspicion is that if we stick with him we will not find ourselves deficient up front based on what is being constructed behind him.

I think looking at the current ins and outs we are really trying to make a serious impact on the pitch, why risk it at the last hurdle by hedging on a player that has a dubious injury record.

I like him and think he will score goals if fit, but he needs serious competition

Fair. Absolutely agree about competition, especially if Richarlison and Lankshear are going to be moved on.
The frustrating thing is that prior to Spurs he had a pretty good injury record. I suppose with us it's not been one recurring thing - knee and ankle injuries were the two big absences

Interestingly the reports and talk about lack of out and out strikers in the game is ramping up, it really is an issue in the game. I get sports change but a game where 10 years ago having 2 Strikers was common, we are now entering a phase where we have none

This was interesting

The market certainly appears small and is requiring clubs to look further afield or take greater chances if they aren't simply going to throw down big money.
I'd normally dismiss a TeamTalk article out of hand but it was notable that this one specifically raised two relatively obscure young players as Kroupi alternatives that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere, citing their 'sources'.
