Set Pieces

I'm with Pirate55 on this one, we look hopeless at corners.

Loads of our corners either hit the first man, go into the keeper's arms, or float harmlessly over everyone.

Can someone put accurate figures into this sum please:

We average 5 corners per game x 50 games = 250 attempts but at 1% conversion that is 2 or 3 goals whereas with 5% conversion it would be 10-15 goals.

I.e. I don't know how many corners we average, nor what a "high conversion rate" could conceivably be.

See Steveawol's post no 26 on pg 2 of this thread for some interesting figures.

I've compiled a table using the stats for corners in the 2012/13 Premier League season from StatsBomb | Corners Part I: Goals For And Against plus StatsBomb | Corners Part II: Shots And PDO and unsurprisingly the figures confirm what most of us have already observed, that our team weren't much good at corners last season.

Spurs ranked 19th in the league for the % of corners won which led to a shot (13.03% compared to the league average of 19.11%), 19th for the % of corners won resulting in a goal scored (1.15% v 3.02%) and 19th in the league for the % of corners conceded resulting in a goal against (4.38% v 2.90%). Fortunately we were dominant enough in open play to concede fewer corners than any other team in the league and won the third most, which mitigated somewhat for how inept we were at them. Hopefully this season we'll do better...

Cheers Steve, that is really interesting. Do you have similar data for percentage of corners that lead to a goal?

Great work again SteveAWOL. Thanks.

If you were to look at the NET results from corners last season, I calculate it as follows:

Man U 9
Man C. 2
Chelsea 8
Ars. 0
Spurs. -4
Everton. 1
Liverpool 0

I don't know how anyone can argue with a straight face that our corners dont need more work. My gast is flabbered by the excuses that some have come up with on here, ranging from not enough time in training, our players are generally poor in the air, we have dont have anyone that can kick a dead ball and bizarrely that we practice a type of chaos theory in training etc .

It really isn't rocket science. It just requires appropriate practice and players well drilled in what they are supposed to do.

Isn't that what the penultimate column shows?

Such fine margins, those 3 goals from corners we conceded to Wigan, Everton and Chelsea in those 2-2 draws during the run-in cost us 6pts which could've seen us leap frog the Chavs and **** to finish level on points with City. At least we don't seem to be quite so vulnerable from corners this season, although it was frustrating to see us concede from a set-piece on Saturday.

Twitter / OptaJoe: 33 - Excluding penalties, John Terry has scored eight goals more than any other defender in PL history (Gallas 25). Leader.

If only we had a CB who was that much of a goal threat from set pieces... Perhaps we should put in a cheeky bid for that Caulker fella...

Twitter / BBCMOTD: Cardiff have now scored a joint-high three goals from corners in the Premier League this season (with Emirates Marketing Project) #MOTD

Gylfi takes a good corner but we keep placing them too close to the keeper. We should aim for the penalty spot and attack it from the edge of the box, using Dawson, Kaboul etc.

And still some people dispute the importance of corners!

Who was it that said we don't have enough time in training to devote to them and that we are prioritising other areas?

So saying that there are several areas of importance and that we don't have the time to prioritise all of them on the training ground is the same as disputing that corners are important?

Nevermind, I shouldn't have asked...

The thing I've noticed is that a lot of our players are stationary when the corner comes in, usually you'd have the big guys running towards the penalty spot/six yard area as the ball is in flight, with one making a near post run and a couple hanging around at the back post, but instead everyone is just standing around already in position and expecting the ball to just land on their head. Look at how many goals Terry gets compared to say Dawson, I can't believe it's because we're just not good at taking corners.

I think corners & free kicks looked better for a while when Siggy was on them, but since we've signed Eriksen, he is taking them all and it is back to failing to clear the first man or succesfully clearing the last man

I can't believe how **** Eriksen is at taking corners! I really can't believe it. A lot of his freekicks look dangerous, but his corners are just pure ****. He's probably taken about 60 corners for us so far, not a single good one, as far as I can remember. Very strange. I like him a lot as a player, but his corners so far, damn, just incredibly ****.

Agree with this. Eriksen's corners were poor enough tonight
