Rodrigo Bentancur

You say that like you are not in the minority who thinks this.
I've seen plenty say Danso is our best actual defender, but regardless of opinions on that your actual point about how having a steady player in the team won't get you top 4/5 is plain wrong.

In fact it was only the other week Neville on his podcast was talking about how you need those types in your team where you know what you're getting week in week out as much as you need those that have a higher ceiling but who can be more inconsistent....

To me Bentancur is a simular to a Danso. If he is playing every single week hes not going to let you down but your not making top 4/5. If he is your 3rd/4th choice then your in a great spot.

I think you are being a little harsh on Bentancur, The guy that made Conte's brick 2 man midfield work and dragged us (with Deki) to 4th in that first season was elite

Injuries and dire management/tactics have made him hard to evaluate post then, but you saw how much better he looked under RDZ and he was by most people's accounts Uruguay's best player in WC (again suffering under poor tactics)

He's good enough for a top 4 team if you don't expect him (or anyone) to be the destroyer, and provider, and tempo controller and goal threat in an utterly dysfunctional team. Now if he could be an option instead of guaranteed starter (because you brought in so much quality), sure that always improves sides, but I think people will be surprised how much RDZ will play him

The Neville's were exactly that.

The Neville's were exactly that.
Think that's underrating Gary a bit. He was the best right back in the league for a long, long time. He's quite self-deprecating and can take a joke at his own expense but I think sometimes it might damage people's memories of him or make younger people think he wasn't as good as he actually was.

United was full of lads who were solid but not top players. Berg, Silvestre, O'Shea, Fletcher, Phil Neville, OGS and so on. Keane always says it was those lads that made the difference for United because when you needed to rely on them, you knew what you'd get.

Frankly, I think he's one of those we might move on now we've locked in Tonali and Fernandes.

Right now we've got 6.5 midfielders for two positions - Tonali, Fernandes, Bentancur, Sarr, Bergvall, Gray, and Gallagher as the .5 (I say this because I think he'll end up being played as our #10 a lot more than people expect).

Sarr looks nailed on to go, but we've also apparently told Bergvall he's going nowhere. And I assume the same logic applies to Gray given both he and Bergvall are a year away from being club-grown and home-grown, banishing our issues with UEFA squad registration for a long time.

5 midfielders for two positions in a season without Europe seems overkill to me. My sneaking suspicion is, Bentancur also moves on, so we have a midfield core of Tonali, Fernandes, Gray and Bergvall, with Gallagher also available to play there or at the 10, alternating with Maddison (until Xavi is fit, at which point we reassess).

Just a hunch.

I believe if not for his injury he would have been sold in January.

I suspect they will be no rush to sell as he's now an 'old head' that can help the others settle but perhaps a review at Christmas to see where things are will take place. He's still one of the few that brings a mature touch of class when he's on his game and because we aren't in europe this season we don't need to worry about the club-grown/howe-grown issue for a while.

But hey what do i know!

He will be the first back up CM behind the 2 new boys.

Bentancur/Gray/Bergvall to give us a depth of 5 for 2 starting spots.

Gallagher and Maddison our options for ACM

I think he is one that we would sell if a good offer came in, but we would not actively look to move on

If we continue to progress and upgrade players, and the likes of Gray develop further then maybe next summer the club will look to sell. Right now, no chance - he is the most experienced and reliable performer in CM, lets not get all giddy because we have a couple of new signings in the mix....
