It is explained superbly here

Lukashenko "I know the position of Russia. I know what Russia offers Ukraine. Why Ukraine, on whose territory military actions are taking place, people dying, is not interested in these negotiations, is another question. Answer to this question can be found in Washington DC"

Still it goes on. Hard to know the real story and direction of travel of this war, just hope it ends shortly and a stable peace is found.
Zero chance of either of those things. This will be a long drawn out affair. It will cost a lot of Ukrainian civilian lives, heavy military casualties on both sides and pretty much a complete crippling of Russia's military hardware (so we can at least be thankful of small mercies).

Increase in demand for US oil and weapons, they will try to keep the war going for as long as possible

Of course, arms companies can't make money if no one is firing the weapons.
How many billion dollars have the US sent in "aid"? Every cent has went into coffers of the arms dealers. Kerfudgingching!

It has to end soon. The Russian economy can go on like now for long or the people will revolt. Also the Ukrainians now have an endless supply of weapons how can Russia keep up?
